Southern Fried Football
with CLAUDE CLEATS

Just when the perennial powers of college football thought it was safe to get back onto the gridiron, a swarm of upset bugs stung many of them. Never in the annals of NCAA football have we seen a weekend filled with so many big upsets. Amidst all of the carnage the LSU Tigers remained constant in victory and #1 in the South. This might not last long, however, as the Florida Gators come calling on Saturday night in Baton Rouge this week.

Here's how the slate of games in Dixie looks this week:

Virginia Tech at Clemson - The high flying Tigers were brought suddenly to Earth by a bunch of feisty Yellow Jackets in Atlanta last week. The Tigers didn't show much offense and made far too many mistakes to beat the Yellow Jackets. This week the Hokies come to town after barely squeezing by North Carolina. If the Tigers lose this one, the wolves will really be chasing Tommy Bowden. Clemson by 6.

N.C. State at Florida State - The Seminoles won a big one last

Saturday over Alabama. The Wolfpack should not pose too much .. of a problem. Florida State by 17. Georgia Tech at Maryland - The Terps upset #10 Rutgers and are making big noise in the ACC Atlantic Division. Georgia Tech is on a high following the upset of Clemson but College Park, Maryland can be a tough place to play. Maryland by 3.

Vanderbilt at Auburn - This is a tough one to call. Who would have expected the War Eagles to sneak up on Florida in The Swamp like they did? Vandy is much improved. This should be quite a battle. Auburn by 2.

Florida at LSU - The loss to Auburn takes some of the luster from Florida's season. If the Gators lose and South Carolina wins tonight, then the Gamecocks will lead the SEC East. Unbelievable! I think the Gators will make it two losses in a row. LSU by 7.

Georgia at Tennessee - The Dawgs seem to have it going. Tennessee does not. Georgia by 6.

Kentucky at South Carolina - What a game this should be! Kentucky's primary strength is the Andre Woodson led offense. Believe it or not, Coach Spurrier's primary strength is his defense. This should be a Thursday Night Classic. Kentucky by 3.
