Absentee voting now available for Nov. 6 election; registrar explains complicated SPLOST/city votes

Absentee voting in person for the November 6 election has already begun in Washington.

"Those who wish to cast their vote in person for the City of Washington or the county-wide SPLOST may vote at the Voter Registrar's office,"said Chief Registrar Gladys Reese.

Absentee voting means voting before the day of the election, and it takes on three forms, she said, Absentee By-mail, Absentee In-Person and Advance Voting.

Absentee In-Person requires a reason for voting before Election Day. These include being out of precinct, elderly, disabled, care giver, election official, religious holiday, public servant, military, and overseas civilian. The dates set for these voters are October 16 through October 26.

Absentee By-mail includes each of the mentioned reasons and also includes "No Reason."

Another form of absentee voting, Advance Voting, occurs all during the last week before the election on Tuesday. This week, October 29 through November 2, is called Advance Week and anyone on the electors list may vote in person and no reason is needed.

To request an absentee ballot to cast your vote by mail in the November 6, 2007, municipal election for the cities of Rayle, Tignall, or Washington, contact the appropriate office by phone. Rayle City Hall is 706-401-0468; Tignall City Hall is 706-285-2551. Washington's election is handled by the Voter Registrar officeat the courthouse at 706-678-1850.

The absentee ballots for the county-wide SPLOST are handled by the Voter Registrar's office. As with all requests for absentee ballots voters will need to call to request an "Application For OfficialAbsentee Ballot" be mailed to them at their current residence. "Once you have completed the application, signed and mailed the application to the courthouse, an Absentee Ballot will then be mailed to you for you vote," Reese said.

"Please remember if you have more than one application they will need to be mailed in separate envelopes," she said. "If you have requested and received an absentee ballot for a city and the countywide elections, please open and vote these ballots one at a time to help eliminate switching the return envelopes."

Those voters eligible for city of Washington may cast their votes for both the city and county-wide SPLOST on the third floor at the courthouse Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

On Tuesday, November 6, 2007, all voters will go to their regular poll locations to vote in the County-wide SPLOST referendum.

The city of Washington will go to either the Edward B Pope Center for District 1 or the courthouse (second floor) for District 2.

"With two elections in the City of Washington and County and elections in Rayle and Tignall, there is bound to be some confusion," Reese said, "so please call the Voter Registrar at 706-678-1850."
