Tigers strike first but take region loss to Morgan
By JOHN LOVVORN

TEVERRIUS JONES SIDESTEPS TO AVOID A TACKLER The Tigers will bounce back against Oglethorpe this Friday.
Last Friday night the Washington- Wilkes Tigers lost their first region game of the year 31-12 to the Morgan County Bulldogs. The loss dropped the Tigers' overall record to 2-4. It also moved Washington down to third in the 8AA South sub-region behind Greene County and Morgan County.

The first quarter went very well for the Tigers. Morgan County started the game with the ball and was forced to go three-and-out. Washington started its first drive on its 44- yard line. After a six-yard pass from Teverrius Jones to DeDe Stewart put the Tigers on the Bulldog side of the field, Eric Scott took over. Short gains by Scott on second and third downs left Washington with fourth and short on the Morgan County 47-yard line. Scott again got the carry, broke through the Bulldogs' defensive line, and outran Morgan's secondary for a Tiger touchdown. Washington came up short on the two point conversion, going ahead of the Bulldogs 6-0 with 7:14 left in the first quarter. This was the Tigers' last first down until the end of the second quarter. Morgan ran the kickoff back to its 38-yard line. After giving up a 17-yard pass for a first down, Washington's defense stopped the Bulldogs again, forcing them to punt. The Tigers went three-and-out and punted back to Morgan County. Morgan started on the W-W 42-yard line and ran three short plays to end the first quarter.

The Bulldogs started the second quarter with a fake punt. The Tiger defense was ready for it, stopping Morgan for a three-yard loss and giving the ball back to the Washington offense. The Tigers again went three-and-out, punting the ball down to the Morgan County 32-yard line. The Bulldogs tripled their total offense on one play, running 68-yards for a touchdown and the lead. The PAT was good, giving Morgan a 7-6 lead with 9:50 left in the second quarter. Washington went three-and-out on its next possession. The Bulldogs started on their 46-yard line and again scored in one play, this time with a 54-yard pass. Morgan again made the extra point, going up 14-6 with 7:57 left in the first half. The Tigers again went three-and-out, punting down to the Morgan County 38-yard line.

Washington's defense tightened up, forcing the Bulldogs to go threeand out. The Tigers fumbled on the first play of the ensuing drive, giving the ball back to Morgan County on the W-W 19-yard line. Washington's defense again played strong, holding the Bulldogs at the 17-yard line and forcing them to attempt a field goal. The field goal was no good, giving the Tigers the ball on their 20-yard line. Scott had two runs for a total of 21-yard, but unfortunately for the Tigers Scott sprained his ankle at the end of the second run, putting him out for at least three weeks. After Scott's runs, Washington attempted a half-back pass. Stewart's pass was intercepted by the Bulldogs on their 45-yard line. A 35-yard pass put Morgan back in field goal range. The Bulldogs made the 36-yard field goal as time expired in the first half, increasing Morgan County's lead to 17-6.

The Tigers started the second half with their longest drive of the game. After a 17-yard kickoff return by Stewart, Deon Jackson took the handoff at the W-W 30-yard line and ran 30-yards before being brought down. A 15-yard gain by Drew Wilson two plays later put the Tigers on the Morgan 24-yard line. After two plays for loss and a false start on Washington, a 16-yard pass from Jones to John Wylie gave the Tigers fourth-and-two. Washington was stopped just short, turning the ball over to the Bulldogs on their 16- yard line. Two plays later, however, the Tiger defense got the ball back. Wilson caused the Morgan County running back to fumble, and Tyrece Ashmore recovered the ball on the Morgan 33-yard line. Wilson also kept the Tigers ensuing drive alive with a great catch for a 35-yard gain on fourth down. This put Washington on the Bulldogs' one-yard line, and Jones scored on the next play, cutting Morgan's lead to 17-12 with 5:08 left in the third quarter. The Bulldogs answered the Tigers on the first play of their next drive, going 79-yards for a touchdown. Morgan's lead was now 24-12 with 4:47 left in the third quarter. Washington again went three-and-out on its next drive. The Bulldogs also went three-and-out, but the Tigers fumbled the punt and a Morgan defender picked up the ball and scored. Morgan County's extra point was again good, giving the game its final score of 31-12 with 14 seconds left in the third quarter. Washington received the kick and ran one play before the end of the quarter.

The Tigers punted three plays into the fourth quarter. Morgan went three-and-out on its next possession, downing the punt on the W-W four-yard line. After an 18-yard run by Jackson, the Bulldogs intercepted a Jones pass at the W-W 27-yard line. The Tiger defense again got the ball back, with Dan Wylie forcing a fumble and Anthony Smith recovering it on the W-W 15-yard line. Washington drove to the Morgan 38-yard line with two passes from Jones to Stewart and a run by Wilson. Jones was again intercepted to end the drive, with the Bulldogs taking over on their 39-yard line. Two plays later the game was over.

The Tigers gained 253 yards Friday night, 156 yards rushing and 97 yards passing. Scott was the leading rusher with 11 carries for 90 yards. Next was Jackson with 14 carries for 56 yards. Wilson was the leading receiver with two receptions for 41 yards. Next was Stewart with four receptions for 40 yards. The Tiger defense was led by Tyrece Ashmore with six tackles, one assist, three tackles-for-loss, and a fumble recovery. Next were Lee Thomson with three tackles, four assists, and a pass broken up, and Tyrance Ashmore with fivetackles, one assist, and three tackles-for-loss.

This Friday night, Washington- Wilkes hosts the Oglethorpe County Patriots. The Patriots have not won a game all season. They base out of a wing-T on offense. Oglethorpe has good speed at the skill positions but is small and inexperienced on the line. On defense the Patriots base out of a 4-3. Kickoff is at 7:30 at Tiger Stadium.
