Renovated Pope Center to be unveiled Tuesday as state-of-the-art new convention facility opens The city leaders of Washington have invited the people of Washington Wilkes to the "unveiling" next week of The Pope Center, which has been renovated and expanded to a state-of-the-art convention center. In an invitation published elsewhere in this issue of The News- Reporter, Mayor Willie E. Burns and members of the city council invite the public to see their new center Tuesday, October 30, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. "It will be a drop-in reception with light refreshments," said Peggy Anderson, the Pope Center's marketing director. "And, although the city is inviting state leaders and legislators and people like that, we really want local folks to come and see their new Pope Center, and see how it can be used for their weddings and parties and social events." The renovation has expanded the center to have a capacity of up to 1,100 for events in over 9,000 square feet of meeting space. The conference center now has video conferencing and teleconferencing capabilities that can bring participants in a live, interactive video feed from several different locations around the world. "We now have a high-tech conference center we can be proud of," Anderson said. "We expect The Pope Center to draw groups and events from all over with our new size and capabilities, and that can be a great source of industry and commerce for Wilkes County. Along with the proposed hotel project, it can be something that benefits the whole community."
Anderson said she hopes that the fact that the center is being marketed as a destination for conferences and large groups doesn't keep the center from being welcoming to smaller local groups. "We're still open for birthday parties, and weddings, receptions, and other special events," she said. "Come see Tuesday - it's amazing."
