Governments should show fiscal responsibility
TO THE EDITOR:

When I have a household expense increase, or income decrease, I have to make some tough decisions about how to pay all my bills and obligations. I can't force someone to give me more money under threat of jail.

Things are tough all over right now, and I have had to put off braces for my son, eliminate a family vacation, and make other sacrifices to meet my budget each month. Unfortunately every time the government has a "need" for more money, they raise taxes. My choice is either pay it or go to jail.

I have a couple of ideas.

Number 1, follow the same rules taxpayers follow and cut expenses if revenue decreases. I had to firean employee years ago when my income declined. It was a hard decision, but sometimes in life you have to make hard decisions. Maybe a program must be cut, or an employee has to be laid off?

Idea number 2, set a budget to spend less than you take in so that you have an emergency fund. I do this, and it has saved me several times.

I'm tired of government constantly racing to raise taxes instead of showing the fiscal responsibility that citizens must show every day. I would love to hear if any of our candidates have a suggestion to bring some sanity to our city and county budgets.

If I'm way off base here, come by my officeand tell me so. But when you do, could you please pay an extra 12% on your insurance premium, my son needs braces.
