Special service Sat. will honor heroes of Kettle Creek A commemorative service on Saturday, October 27, will honor the memory of Revolutionary Militia heroes and especially the Battle of Kettle Creek. The event will be held at the old Hammett Cemetery on Courtground Road in Wilkes County near the site of the famous Battle of Kettle Creek. People from Georgia, South and North Carolina, Texas, and Oklahoma will be present. The Kettle Creek Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) of Washington will be Wilkes County host for the sponsoring organizations. Walter Chewning, a member of the Hammett family and president of the Button Gwinnett Chapter Sons of the American Revolution (SAR), is coordinator of the program along with his wife, JoAnn Chewning, Regent of the William Day Chapter DAR, Lawrenceville. Walter Chewning will preside at the Saturday afternoon ceremony. Dr. Erick Pagan of Washington will sing the National Anthem and Charlie Newcomer, Georgia SAR president, will bring greetings from the Georgia SAR. David Jenkins of Washington, Main Street Development Authority, will tell about the Preserve America grant for archaeological work which is expected to begin soon at the old Hammett property.. Author Biddy Hammett, a member of the DAR and the Hammett family historian, will present a brief biographical history of the Hammett family's Revolutionary heroes.
Following the placing of wreaths on graves by Hammett family members and members of individual SAR and DAR chapters from across Georgia, the commemorative event will end with a musket salute and "Mourn Muskets" by the SAR's Colonel Elijah Clarke Militia; and the SAR benediction.
