'Appraisals and Appetizers' headline membership drive "An Afternoon of Appraisals and Appetizers" will begin the Washington Wilkes Historical Foundation's 2008 membership drive. The afternoon will feature good food along with a chance to talk with antiques experts about personal treasures. The event will be held Sunday afternoon, October 28, from 3 to 6 p.m., at Wisteria Hall, 225 East Robert Toombs Avenue. A contribution of $15 will give the public an opportunity to bring a few family heirlooms or attic items to share. It will also give the individual a year-long membership in the Washington-Wilkes Historical Foundation, helping support its quarterly programming, the Christmas dinner and tour, student scholarships, audio and video histories, preservation efforts, and historic education endeavors in schools and throughout the community. The expert panel of evaluators will be headed by Frank Walsh of Atlanta, former guest appraiser on public television's "Antiques Road Show." Walsh will provide expertise in rare books, manuscripts, maps and prints. Ted Martin, respected antiques dealer and owner of Saffold House Gallery from Madison, will examine furniture, artwork and other items. Cathy and Greg Hawkins, auctioneers extraordinaire, will provide information about ceramics, glassware, collectibles, and a wide variety of other antiques. Debbie Jackson of Tena's Jewelry and Gifts in Washington will bring her broad knowledge of antique jewelry to the table; and Skeet Willingham will be available to discuss sports memorabilia, silver, and Southern pottery.
Stephanie Macchia, president of the Washington-Wilkes Historical Foundation, encourages the whole community to attend. "Our organization is an integral part of what makes Wilkes County so special," Mrs. Macchia says. "Come join with us so that as we grow we can accomplish more in our preservation and educational efforts."
