Southern Fried Football
with CLAUDE CLEATS

Same song, 8th verse! The upsets just keep on coming! South Carolina, poised to move into the Nation's top fiveafter South Florida was upset by Rutgers, went down in flames to a plucky Vanderbilt team 17-6. Later in the day underdog Miami whipped FSU and Georgia Southern stopped giant killer Appalachian State. It was App State's second conference loss. Good thing for Michigan that it doesn't play in the Southern Conference.

How about this week? Which big time programs will bite the dust?

Boston College at Virginia Tech - The Hokies can't wait for the second ranked Eagles to come to town. Last year Boston College embarrassed Tech 22-3. It was the first game Frank Beamer's charges had failed to score a touchdown since the 1997 Gator Bowl. Here's another stat for you, the Hokies (f/k/a Gobblers) are 13-2 on Thursday night. Looks like another No. 2 team will go down for the fourth consecutive week as the Eagles are "gobbled-up" by a touchdown.

Virginia at N.C. State - Al Groh's amazing Cavaliers are 7-1. State upset East Carolina last week, but seems rather weak overall. Virginia by 4.

UNC at Wake Forest - The Tar Heels have steadily improved under Butch Davis' leadership. Wake is rolling now, but UNC has had two weeks to prepare. Looks like the recipe for an upset. UNC by 6.

Clemson at Maryland - The Tigers put 70 points on the board against Central Michigan last week while Maryland lost a one point heartbreaker to Virginia. Tommy Bowden has traditionally had trouble with Maryland's Ralph Friedgen. This one should be really close. Clemson by 1.

Ole Miss at Auburn - Unless the Tigers have a terrible hangover following their tough loss in Baton Rouge, they should handle the Rebels without much difficulty. Auburn by 20.

Mississippi State at Kentucky - The Bulldogs are a welcome relief for Kentucky after playing LSU and Florida back-to-back. Kentucky by 17.

Georgia vs. Florida (in Jacksonville) - The Dawgs have had two weeks to prepare. It won't matter. Florida is too strong. Florida by 10.

South Carolina at Tennessee - Look for the Vols to rebound with a vengeance. If they can stop USC's running game, this one won't be close. Don't you know Phil Fulmer would love to run it up on the "Old Ball Coach"! UT by 21.

Miami (Ohio) at Vandy - Vandy picks up win number 5 as the Commodores seek bowl eligibility. Vandy by 20.
