Friend of Youth auction, barbecue to be held by Optimists on Nov. 15

The annual Optimist Club Friend of Youth Auction and Barbecue will be held Thursday, November 15, at the VFW Post 5899 home on Andrew Drive in Washington.

Frank Bentley will be preparing his always-delicious barbecued pork, Brunswick stew, and all the trimmings. Plates will be available for eat-in or take-out beginning at 5 p.m.

The auction will begin at 6:30 p.m. Items to be auctioned are provided by Optimist Club members and/or generously donated by local businesses. Major League Umpire Marvin Hudson will again have a number of MLB official autographed items, such as baseballs, baseball bats, hats, and jerseys. All proceeds will go directly to the club's annual service projects that benefit the youth of Wilkes County.

Mark Walker, Optimist Club member and well-known auctioneer, will again add his humor and flair to this year's event. Several door prizes will be given away throughout the auction. To be eligible for the door prizes, persons must buy a ticket to the barbecue and must be present during the auction to win.

In addition, the drawing for the 50-CC Eagle ATV (4 wheeler) will take place during the auction. Tickets are available for $5.00 each and may be purchased from any Optimist Club member prior to the auction, and will also be available at the event. You do not have to be present to win the ATV.

Everyone is invited to attend. Club members invite the public to support the youth of the community by attending this fun event. Enjoy a delicious barbecue dinner and stay for the auction; attend the auction only; pick up your plates for takeout -- it doesn't matter -- just come, Optimist members say.

Tickets for the barbecue are available for $6.50 from any Optimist Club member or at The Company Store on East Robert Toombs Avenue.
