Youth worship service to focus on the 'hallowed God,' not Halloween

Transforming Life Ministries will sponsor its annual "Hallowed Be Thy Name" Youth Worship Service on November 4, 4 p.m. at the Third Shiloh Center.

Amethyst Wynn, pastor and convener, said, "It is our goal to focus the minds of our youths on spiritual excellence, the 'Hallowed God,' not Halloween. Also, we want to inspire youths to pursue academic excellence, and help them to realize the importance of an education."

The service is an opportunity for them to express their gifts and talents, she said. "Youths will be singing, dancing, playing musical instruments, reciting poetry, and doing dramatizations. From the secular point of view, this could be described as a Talent Show."

A new feature of the program this year is the special guest speaker, Dr. Ralph L. Simpson, a native of Atlanta, who has roots in Washington. Dr. Simpson is the grandson of the late Mr. Henry Simpson, Sr. and Mrs. Maggie Simpson; he is the nephew of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Callaway (Roselle), and Reverend and Mrs. David Fanning (Ruby Nell.) Dr. Simpson began his career working in a maximum-security prison after receiving a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from West Georgia. He observed so many individuals who had ruined their lives; he decided that he could become a part of the solution. He set out to help young people avoid hav- ing to serve time in a correctional institution or in the penal system.

As an educator, he taught elementary and middle school, and experienced tremendous success as a teacher, mentor, and leader. Feeling that he could be a more effective leader as a school administrator, Dr. Simpson pursued a Master of Education Degree in Administration and Supervision. To further strengthen his academic portfolio, he completed his Specialist in Educational Leadership at West Georgia, and earned a Doctorate of Education in Supervision and Leadership at the University of Sarasota.

In July 2007, Dr. Simpson was appointed to the position of Area Assistant Superintendent for DeKalb County Schools. Dr. Simpson recently had a street named after him, and published his first book, "From Remedial To Remarkable."

Even though Dr. Simpson will be speaking, along with remarks from Wilkes County Superintendent of Schools Joyce Williams, this program is designed to highlight, encourage, and "hallow" the youths. Thus, the added attraction for the evening is the dinner menu, which includes fried fish, chicken strips, chicken wings, baked beans, cole slaw, fruit salad, fruit cups, cookies, candies, and surprise treats provided by the Simpson family.

The public is invited to attend, especially the youths. For further information, please call 706-678-5492.
