School board, county leaders pass property tax increases

The Wilkes County Board of Commissioners and the Board of Education passed tax millage rate increases last week that will mean significanttax hikes for all Wilkes County property owners.

After the required three hearings each, the Board of Education approved a proposed millage rate of 16.75 mills. The budget for the 2007-2008 was set in June at $14,460,713.32, some $1.3 million over last year's $13.15 million.

On the county side of property taxes, the reduction in the tax digest forced the increase in the millage rate to meet the county's budget. As a result, the millage rate for 2007 was passed at 9.751 for unincorporated areas of the county and 10.378 for incorporated areas.

Because of the increase the law required three public hearings. Those hearings were held on Thursday, October 25, at 10 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. and on Thursday, November 1, at 1:30 p.m.

The final hearing was followed immediately by a called meeting of the Wilkes County Board of Commissioners last Thursday afternoon during which they formally adopted the millage rate.
