Antique appraisals kick off drive for historical group

The Washington-Wilkes Historical Foundation held an afternoon of Appetizers and Appraisals at Wisteria Hall recently.

"The Sunday event was very successful and over fifty people attended to have their treasures appraised and identified," Foundation President Stephanie Macchia said.

Appraisers included Dr. Tim Drake of Clemson University, Ted Martin of the Saffold House Antiques in Madison, along with Debbie Jackson of Tena's Jewelry appraising jewelry, Greg and Cathy Hawkins of Hawkins Auctions for collectibles, and Skeet Willingham for sports memorabilia, pottery and silver. Frank Walsh of Atlanta, who has appeared on PBS's Antiques Roadshow, appraised rare books, manuscripts and documents.

Appetizers were provided by Pam and Newton Gunter and the house was beautifully decorated and the perfect setting for the afternoon of fun, Macchia said, "This afternoon's event was the kickoff membership drive for the 2008 season and we are delighted with the turnout."

The highest appraisal of the afternoon went to a quilt owned by Anna Gunter, given to her great-grandparents as a wedding gift in 1840. Dr. Drake estimated that the quilt was originally made around 1830 in the Mariner's Compass design. He was thrilled to see its pristine condition and awarded Gunter the highest appraisal value of the afternoon.
