Perry completes first marathon in Marine Corps' 32nd running

Daniel Perry, a 1992 W-WCHS graduate, completed his first marathon on Sunday, October 28, by finishing the 32nd annual Marine Corps Marathon in 5 hours, 40 minutes and 12 seconds.

The race began north of the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, and wound through the Virginia surburbs, through Georgetown and downtown Washington, D.C. The 26.2-mile marathon route took more than 32,000 runners past Georgetown University, the U.S. Capitol, various Smithsonian Institution museums, the Jefferson Memorial, and other sites.

Participants crossing the finish line at the Iwo Jima Memorial received large finishers medals and goodie bags. Chocolate brown race shirts were given to participants at the pre-race exposition held at the D.C. Armory a few days leading up to the race.

Perry began training in May for the marathon with members of the Correcaminos Running Club in McAllen, Texas. Training included long runs - "long" being up to 20 miles - on Saturday mornings and shorter runs - up to 10 miles - during the regular week. Also included were swimming, weight, and cardio training.

Perry was the Tiger mascot during the 1991 Tiger football season and was a three-year member of the literary team while at W-WCHS. He graduated in 1995 from Georgia College in Milledgeville with a bachelor's degree in journalism.

He now lives in Harlingen, Texas, and is an informational writer for The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College.
