Southern Fried Football
with CLAUDE CLEATS

The races for the conference title in the SEC and ACC appear to be going down to the wire. The surging Georgia Bulldogs and Clemson Tigers have their fans delirious with excitement! Both teams have high hurdles to clear to get to their respective conference championship games and Georgia needs some help to pass Tennessee for that privilege. There are some terrific games on tap for this weekend.

North Carolina at Georgia Tech - The Yellow Jackets need a win here to salvage a decent season. Tar Heel head man Butch Davis has his boys playing better, but Tech should prevail at Grant Field. Georgia Tech by 10.

Vanderbilt at Tennessee - There seems to be little hope for the Commodores derailing the UT Express headed for Atlanta. Tennessee by 14.

Mississippi State at Arkansas - Sylvester Croom has the Starkville Dogs playing better than they have in several years. Arkansas is somewhat of an enigma, but don't expect the Razorbacks to lose to State at home. Arkansas by 10.

Duke at Notre Dame - Who would believe it, but the Blue Devils have their best chance at beating the Irish in 50 years. Notre Dame will be a slight favorite at home, but the Dookies smell the blood in the water. Notre Dame wins a close one. Notre Dame by 3.

LSU at Ole Miss - Nationally ranked #1 LSU should have little trouble with Ole Miss except for the rivalry factor. The Rebels have had a very disappointing season and will put up a fight, but it will not be enough. LSU by 21.

Kentucky at Georgia - The Dawgs must win to keep their SEC Championship and BCS Bowl bid hopes alive. Kentucky has been up and down and they still pose a real threat to Coach Richt's team. Georgia will have to control the Kentucky passing attack, or at least slow it down to win this one. Georgia by 8.

Miami at Virginia Tech - The Hokies are back in the BCS Top Ten. Miami is but a shadow of its former self. The rout is on in Blacksburg! Virginia Tech by 24.

Boston College at Clemson - A trip to the ACC Championship game is at stake in this one. The winner goes and the loser stays home on December 1. Clemson is playing the best football in the ACC at this point. Boston College has been slumping. This nationally televised encounter should be a "barn burner." Clemson by 10.

Maryland at Florida State - Fresh from an upset win over Boston College the Terps pose a problem for FSU. Both teams are jockeying for bowl position. It is unknown at press time who will play quarterback for the Seminoles, but whoever it is should lead the Noles to victory. Florida State by 7.

N.C. State at Wake Forest - Tom O'Brien has the Wolfpack turned completely around. Wake is reeling from the blowout loss at Clemson last week. Wake Forest appears to be the better team on paper. It should be close, but the Deacons prevail. Wake Forest by 6.

Louisville at South Florida - The Bulls have fallen all the way out of the Top 25. So has Louisville. Home field advantage gives South Florida the edge. South Florida by 4.
