Civil War Round Table to hear Confederate soldier's letters Nat Turner will present the story of Cobb's Georgia Legion through the letters of infantryman Samuel Burney, a native of Madison, Georgia, at the Washington Civil War Round Table meeting on Monday evening, November 26 at 6 p.m., at The Jockey Club Restaurant on The Square in Washington. The famous Cobb's Legion was formed by Col. Thomas R.R. Cobb of Athens, and was part of the Army of Northern Virginia. "Samuel Burney in his letters home reveal so very well what many of our forefathers actually thought, felt and what they had to endure in fighting for their family, their home and their country," Claibourne Darden, Round Table president, said. Their hardships much of the time were unbelievable, as Samuel Burney wrote from Goldsboro, N.C., on March 26, 1862: "In coming here I put on two pairs of socks, two shirts, one vest, and two coats; used Annie's comfort(er) and Ma's black merino scarf. I kept warm and caught no cold, while nine tenths of our Company is sick with colds." They still fought and fought well. Col. Thomas R.R. Cobb was killed at Fredericksburg and Samuel Burney was badly wounded at Chancellorsville. Turner is a native of Covington, Ga., and a graduate of Georgia Tech. He was a commissioned officerin the U.S. Navy and currently resides in Gainesville, Ga. He is the author of "A Southern Soldier's Letters Home." He will have available at the meeting personalized copies of his book for those who would like one. Darden says that the public is invited and welcomed. "The cost of the meeting is $10 per person and includes a very nice dinner. Please make reservations, as soon as possible, by e-mail at claibourne@ darden-atlanta.net or by calling 404-210-5811 and leaving a message."
Membership in the Washington Civil War Round Table is open to everyone, and new members can join at the meeting. Annual dues are $25 for individuals, $35 for a family and $15 for students.
