59 years as a barber
As far as I know, Julius Rousey is the only traditional barber left in Wilkes County. He has been cutting hair for men for 59 years, starting out in 1948 with the late Ben Jones, George Ward, and Luke Poss in the building which now houses

The Sandwich Shop on the south side of The Square. Not only do his customers get a hair cut, they get lot of entertainment through Julius' conversations and chatter with his customers. He has cut a lot of hair in those 59 years and is not thinking of retiring any time soon. Julius will be 85 years old on Monday, November 26. His wife Irene tries to "keep him in line" along with their two sons,

Bill and Tom; three grandsons, and one granddaughter.

Something woke me up at about three o'clock Thursday morning. At first I couldn't place the sound. Then

realized that it was rain! I got up and looked out the upstairs window for a few minutes, enjoying the sight and sound. Then I went back to bed and enjoyed the sound of the rain on the tin roof. . . . Some people in town recorded a half an inch of rain at that time. Norris says he recorded

half of an inch on Hill Street.

.

There is a rumor that the Artichoke Mustard Pickle cooks at the Episcopal Church are contemplating retiring. If you are a fan of this delicacy, you may be wise to stock up at this year's Episcopal Bazaar Saturday, December 1. The recipe is

well-guarded secret.

Washington-Wilkes Tourism Director Ashley Barnett says that Washington-Wilkes now has six commercials running on the NBC Augusta television channel -- Morning Show, Today Show, and Regis & Kelly. Six Washington-Wilkes businesses bought spots on the Augusta channel and have already seen great results from them. The businesses are Petal Pushers Christmas, Georgia Realty, Fievet's, Bee Southern, City of Washington

museums), and Wilkes County Tourism. I've seen the Petal Pushers one and it is very good. . . Bradley and Katherine Barber of

Old South Marketing created the commercials.

Sunday, November 25, is the longawaited

Messiah program presented by the Washington Chorale at the First Baptist Church under the direction of Shirley Gunter. Time is eight o'clock; admission is free; and seats will go very fast. Be warned.

Oleta and Hoppy McAvoy stopped in Chattanooga, Tenn., to spend the night on their return trip visiting friends in the Mid-Western states. At breakfast the next morning they were surprised to see Allan and Sharlene Zima also of Washington- Wilkes. The Zimas are newcomers to Washington. They live in the house across the street from Dave and Laura Toburen on South Alexander Avenue.

.

Who but Hoppy and Oleta McAvoy would pick turnip greens fresh out of the garden; wash them; cook them; and then deliver them to friends!! Thanks, Hoppy and Oleta.

The Wilkes County unit of the

Salvation Army is beginning its annual bell-ringing to call attention to the Christmas collection kettles located at Ingles and Bi-Lo. Bellringers are needed. Call Dot Harris at 706-678-2818 to choose a time. The schedule appears elsewhere in this issue o The News-Reporter.

.

Ebenezer Baptist Church is donating a portion of the proceeds from the sale of the cookbook --

Ebenezer's Best -- to the Charping family. The cookbooks are $12.00 each and are available at Poss-Ace Hardware and from members of the church.

.

An act of faith -- Chip Hardin came in Friday to buy a surge protector. His comment was, "One of these days we're going to have a big storm, and I'm going to be ready." . . . And here we are in the midst of the biggest drought that we've had in 100 years.

.

The News-Reporter and Radio Shack will be closed this Friday which is supposed to be one of the biggest shopping days of the year ("Hot Friday" or "Black Friday"). But in order to honor the nationally advertised Radio Shack pricing, many of those items will be available in our store Monday only (Nov. 26), from 9 a.m. until noon.
