UGA baseball camps accepting registrations from area players

Justin Holmes, All-SEC shortstop in 2004, will be one of the coaches hosting baseball camps at Foley Field next month.

With the W-W Tiger football season now over, the attention of young athletes is turning to other sports. Among those is baseball and it's not too early to start preparing for the 2008 spring seasons in Little League, middle school, and high school. One opportunity for outstanding training is the University of Georgia's series of Holiday Baseball Camps and Clinics which will begin in mid-December.

One camp is already sold out but several more are still available and participants are encouraged to register early.

Professional baseball players, current and former UGA Bulldog players, and the entire Georgia coaching staff will be in attendance to assist and instruct campers and to guide them to their next level of baseball performance. The camper-to-instructor ratio is "a very personalized" 6:1 which guarantees individual instruction. All instruction will be held at Foley Field, the UGA Diamond Dogs' home facility.

Among the coaches/instructors is UGA assistant coach Justin Holmes, a former All-SEC Bulldog ('04) and professional player with the Cleveland Indians organization and the Traverse City (Mich.) Beach Bums. A number of Washington-Wilkes and area players have already benefitedfrom his individual instruction through "Select Hitting" last season.

The UGA camps are set up for baseball players ages 8-18 at two levels of instruction. The Youth hitting, pitching, and catching clinics are designed for ages 8-12 and will be conducted on Saturday, December 22. For older athletes through age 18, there are one- or two-day sessions available December 15-16 and December 20-21 in hitting, pitching, and catching. The goals of the Diamond Dawg Baseball Camps are to offer a setting that enables prospective student-athletes an opportunity to showcase their individual talents; to provide an environment to learn and improve mechanics and fundamentals in specific baseball skills; and to offer the best quality instruction to ensure a positive baseball experience and prepare each player for his respective level of competition.

With two College World Series appearances in the past four years, UGA Head Coach David Perno has established the University of Georgia as one of the nation's finest baseball programs. Perno, 39, has spent 10 years with the Bulldogs including the past fiveseasons as head coach. With Perno at the helm since 2002, Georgia has shown a consistent standard of excellence on and off the field. In school history, the Bulldogs have made only seven NCAA Regional trips, and three of those appearances have come during Perno's tenure. Furthermore, the Bulldogs advanced to Omaha for the College World Series in two of those three trips. Georgia, along with Texas, Cal State-Fullerton, Miami (Fla.) and Oregon State, are the only fiveprograms in the country with two CWS appearances since 2004.
