Get ready to open your hearts and your pocketbooks…

The Washington-Wilkes Humane Animal Society's "Silent Auction Extravaganza" will take place Saturday, December 8, from 2 until 4 p.m. at the Washington Lions Club.

In addition to live music and mouth-watering refreshments, guests will enjoy bidding on a wide variety of items. The list includes sightseeing tours in Gary Ward's Cessna 140; a football autographed by UGA coach Mark Richt; horseback-riding lessons; gym memberships; fabulous gift certificates, donated by area merchants; a "Washington plate," contributed by Rosemary Hopkins; rounds of golf at the Rocky Branch Golf Club in Lincolnton; an assortment of gift bags and baskets; oak quilt stands, handcrafted by Bobby West; books; cakes and pies for the holidays; beauty products; pet supplies; and much more.

"The auction is a great opportunity to findthe perfect gift for that hard-to-please someone on your Christmas list, while supporting a worthy cause at the same time," said Manuel Bailey, humane society president. "We desperately need a new facility to house our puppies and dogs and hope this auction will put us a little further down the road."

He went on to encourage local residents to attend the auction and help the society make life better for the unwanted animals in Wilkes County. "It's going to take all of us working together to build a new shelter."

In addition to fund-raisers, the humane society is also seeking grant monies as well as donations from the private and corporate sectors to fund the new shelter.

Anyone who would like to donate an item for the silent auction or make a monetary contribution to the W-WHAS is asked to contact Bonnie Branch at 706-678-7505 or Jacquelyn Johnson at 706-678-2538.
