THE ACADEMIC CORNER On May 18, 2007, eighty-three Washington Wilkes Comprehensive High School seniors marched across the field at Tiger Stadium to receive College Prep and Technical Career Diplomas. Those graduates placed Wilkes County in the top seven systems in the state with the highest graduation rate. Wilkes County's graduation rate is 87.4 percent, higher than 170 Georgia systems! Systems across the state are asking how Wilkes County achieved such success! As Wilkes County Schools have reexamined our practices, we findthat there are a multitude of factors: l High expectations for all students l Fully certified teachers, most with advanced degrees l Small class size l Extra assistance and tutoring available for any student l A great music program l A competitive athletic program l A strong Pre-Kindergarten program
Wilkes County Schools' success boils down to a very simple formula, graduation is everyone's business! The Wilkes County community and its school system have a lifetime investment in the education of our children. All are willing to go above and beyond the call of duty to establish meaningful relationships with students and provide support to meet individual needs. As the 2007 graduating seniors have been polled, Krystle Kvalheim said it best when she said that "the best thing about going to school in Washington is the faculty. Everyone is so personable and easy to approach. Teachers are always willing to help from the first day of freshman year, through tests, to graduation, and are even willing to help after graduation. Teachers are always concerned about students doing their best and knowing their strengths and weaknesses. I definitely miss being called by my first name when I walk into a classroom." From Pre-K to twelfth grade, graduation is the goal and Wilkes County Schools are at the top!
