Washington-based GSP troopers attend DUI paperwork training

Georgia Department of Public Safety personnel in East Central Georgia have completed an Administrative License Suspension (ALS) and DUI update class held recently in Madison. Approximately 53 troopers from GSP posts in Conyers, Madison, Milledgeville, Thomson, and Washington attended the training.

Those attending were updated on a number of issues involving DUI cases and Administrative License Suspension hearings. The training included the issuance of license suspension forms in DUI cases, testimony and documents for an ALS hearing, recent DUI case law, implied consent matters, filing motions with the Administrative Court, roadblock issues as well as other issues surrounding ALS and DUI cases.

The training was part of a Georgia State Patrol program that provides legal representation to Georgia State Troopers when they testify at Administrative License Suspension hearings. The ALS hearings involve the driver's license suspension of motorists that have been charged with driving under the influence. In Georgia, under certain circumstances, the State can administratively suspend the driver's license of a motorist charged with DUI. If the motorist contests the administrative suspension, an ALS hearing is held.

The Administrative License Suspension program for the Georgia State Patrol is funded with a grant through the Georgia Governor's Officeof Highway Safety. The ALS program is now in its fourth year and is coordinated by Dee Brophy, a former prosecutor.
