Celebrations of old-time Christmas accompany weekend tour activities Adding to this weekend's annual Christmas Tour of Homes will be a celebration of old-time Christmas at Callaway Plantation Friday night and a day of Victorian Christmas vignettes at The Robert Toombs House Saturday. Friday evening, the annual Christmas at Callaway Plantation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. with period decorations gracing the old homes and crafters and guides in authentic period costumes demonstrating oldtime skills in various locations on the plantation. "We'll have a blacksmith working, we'll be cooking over an open fire, we'll have spinning and weaving and storytelling," said Olivia Jackson. "And luminaries will light the way all over the area." Christmas music from the past will be played by the Coe family, Brenda Vandiver, Susan Echols, and Debbie Danner. Period decorations will grace all the rooms in the Brick House, Log Cabin, Country Store, Dally Cabin, Gilmer House and the Weaving and Ironing House, and each will be open for visitors. The staff at Callaway Plantation and the chairman of the event, Elaine Filipiak, are decorating the homes with help from individuals, groups, and businesses this week in preparation for Friday. Then Saturday, December 8, the Robert Toombs House will present "A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
"This Victorian favorite will be an ongoing presentation that will capture your heart," said Marcia Campbell. Dickens characters will present scenes from the life of Ebenezer Scrooge in each room, she said, and "the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future will present a haunting performance, as they guide visitors through the Robert Toombs House."
