Proposed city budget for 2008 now available for public review

The public can examine copies of the city of Washington's proposed annual budget for 2008 and give their input at a public hearing Monday afternoon.

The proposed budget is available for public inspection and review during regular business hours, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at City Hall.

A public hearing to receive citizen input is set for Monday evening at 5:30 prior to the regular December City Council meeting at The Pope Center.

Mayor Willie Burns and the council have announced their intention to formally adopt the budget at a meeting set for Monday, December 17 at 9 a.m.

In preliminary budget meetings in November, city leaders examined budget items at length to see what could be trimmed or eliminated to balance the budget, which is required by Georgia state law.

With a preliminary budget of $16,560,000 and expected revenues of $14,656,000, City Administrator Mike Eskew, City Clerk Debbie Danner, and city Finance Coordinator Sherri Bailey met with Mayor Burns and city councilmen Ray Hardy, Ed Pope Jr., Pamela Eaton, Rev. G.L. Avery, and Maceo Mahoney to discuss trade-offs in the budget.

The council met finally on Wednesday, November 28, to finalize the budget cuts, and held a millage rate hearing on Thursday, November 29.

Public notice of the budget hearings are published in this issue of The News-Reporter.
