Wilkes deputies investigating church, deer camp break-ins

Wilkes County deputies are investigating a rash of break-ins over the weekend that struck two churches, a business, and three hunting camps, and are asking for help from anyone who may have seen something suspicious.

Sheriff's Investigator Bud Harrison said that all the break-ins apparently happened Friday night.

Phillips Mill Baptist Church, on the Greensboro Highway, suffered damage at the hands of vandals during a break-in. The vandals discharged fireextinguishers and wrote on walls with paint in the church's fellowship hall.

The Washington Church of God on the Tignall Highway was also broken into, but damage was limited to a broken window and a damaged office door. The church's safe, empty except for blank checks, was stolen, Harrison said.

A repair business on Lexington Road was also broken into Friday night.

Three hunting camps, one off Broad Road, one off the Sandtown Road, and one off Sharon Road, were also broken into Friday, and various items were stolen from each one.

"It's not really unusual to have break-ins at hunting camps this time of year," Harrison said, "but it's very unusual for it to happen to churches."

At this point investigators have few leads on the break-ins, Harrison said. "But if anyone has any information on any of these, let us know. I don't recall a church vandalized to this extent in years, and we need anyone who saw anything to give us a call."
