W-WMS Beta Club collecting canned food; band, chorus planning Christmas concert

The Washington-Wilkes Middle School Beta Club is sponsoring a canned food drive December 3-7. Parents are urged to help support this cause by sending canned food items to their children's homeroom classes. The homeroom that collects the most canned foods will receive a pizza party.

Yearbooks are still on sale for $26. The cost may be paid in full or two installments of $13. If parents or students are interested in purchasing a yearbook, they should see Joni Keiser, Dawn Pickens, or Pam Hall.

The Gates-MacGinitie Reading Test, originally scheduled for December 5, has been rescheduled for December 11 and 12. This test is composed of two components: reading comprehension and vocabulary. The Gates Test is a powerful diagnostic tool used nationally to help teachers, parents and schools know their students' level of reading achievement. It is extremely important for all of our students to get a good night's rest and eat breakfast prior to taking this test. All students are required to be reading on grade level before the end of each school year. If a student is not reading on grade level, he will not be promoted to the next grade. Please encourage your child to do their very best while taking this test and to read daily.

Both the band and choral departments will be performing a Christmas concert on December 4 at 7 p.m. The concert is free and will take place in the school's gymnasium. Both departments will also be performing at 9 a.m. on December 14 as part of the school's holiday program. The community is welcome, and we encourage you to come and support our students who have worked hard all year to learn new music.

The W-WMS Tiger basketball teams had their last home game December 3, against Taliaferro at 4 p.m.
