Pizza Hut, Faith in Action work to bring surplus food to seniors
Pizza Hut Harvest seeks out charitable organizations for managing surplus products released by local restaurants. When the agency found that WAFIA Inc. might qualify as a Food Rescue Agency, contact was made with Joseph Harris, WAFIA director, to explore possibilities. "It seemed a small windfall for our efforts as a charitable organization and a great plan for use of surplus food products," Harris said. "We wish that more programs like this could be developed." With Hall's supervision and regular reporting to Pizza Harvest, WAFIA picks up the frozen product and makes weekly deliveries for local use. Currently, God's Marketplace, Harper's Family Care, and Washington Manor are recipients. The Harvest Support Center has developed strict temperature, shelf life and carryout standards for the various products. Procedures de- veloped between Hall and Harris exceed those standards and provide about 20 pizzas per week, plus other food products. Discussions of the program began in September.
WAFIA Inc. is a local charitable agency providing services to the homebound and is supported in part by the CSRA Agency on Aging, local churches, church groups, and personal donations.
