THE ACADEMIC CORNER Wilkes County administrators and classroom teacher-leaders are participating in the Georgia Leadership Institute for School Improvement (GLISI). The vision of GLISI is to "develop highly capable educational leaders at all levels" who can "drive change for student success." Its mission is "to equip, support, and inspire education leaders to drive change for student success by providing leadership development, policy influence, research and evaluation, relationship development, and continuous improvement processes and tools. One component, or module, of the GLISI framework is the formation and leadership of a Better-Seeking Team within each school. The Better- Seeking Team (BST) is a school-based team led by the principal and comprised of educational leaders, including teachers, who work together collaboratively to learn and to improve student achievement. Members of the BST at Washington-Wilkes Elementary are: Wanda Jenkins, Janet Pharr, Barbara Lenon, David Harris, Angela McGill, Lisa Newsome, Tabitha Lott, and Robin Booker. These team members were selected by the WWES administrators based on their personal attributes, work styles, and values. They all possess proven track records for success, excellent communication skills, and they sustain a commitment towards student success with a "whatever it takes" attitude. The WWES Better-Seeking Team has selected achievement in mathematics as its school improvement focus. The team began its work last spring when the 2007 CRCT scores were released. Since GLISI promotes data-driven decision making in all its initiatives, the CRCT scores were a perfect resource as the team began planning its work. The team set its goals to align with school and system School Improvement Plans. CRCT data was disaggregated and then analyzed to identify areas of weakness as well as strengths in the mathematical domains. Individual students were also identified who did not meet the required performance levels in the mathematical domains of the test.
The Better-Seeking Team meets every other week to address mathematics improvement at the school. Some examples of the work done by the team are: reading journal articles on research based mathematics instructional practices and strategies; the development of consistent pacing of instruction administration of assessments, and grading policies; and creating personalized learning/ instructional plans for struggling students. We know that the measures we are taking will result in success for all.
