Consumer judging team places third at area 4-H Cotton Bowl

Wilkes County 4-H Consumer Judging Team members who participated in the Cotton Bowl were (front row, l-r) Emily McNure, Dixie Lee Trimm, Ivy Safrit, Andrea Hill, Jonathan Wood, (back) Ty Owens, John Pope, Michael Edwards, Zach Gebing, and Amanda Wood.
The Wilkes County Senior Consumer Judging Team took third place in the Area 4-H Cotton Bowl and Consumer Jamboree held at Fort Discovery in Augusta.

For their effort and knowledge the third place seniors received cotton canvas hanging bags.

Local 4-H'ers who competed were: juniors - Andrea Hill, Ivy Safrit, and Jonathan Wood; seniors - Michael Edwards, Zach Gebing, Emily McNure, Ty Owens, John Pope, Dixie Lee Trimm, and Amanda Wood.

The 4-H Cotton Bowl and Consumer Jamboree activity featured two facets of competition. Senior 4-H'ers (grades 9 - 12) presented a 90-second public service announcement on cotton. 4-H'ers in grades 5-8 prepared a poster to promote cotton and used the poster to present a 30-second cotton commercial. Each contestant also tested his clothing and consumer knowledge by ranking four classes of clothing, consumer goods, or services from "best to worst" for a particular buying situation. Items judged this year were sunglasses, gift cards, popcorn, and t-shirts.

"The 4-H'ers learned how to make knowledgeable, rational decisions when purchasing goods and services," said Jackie Crew, Wilkes County Extension Program Assistant. "They also learned the importance of cotton as an apparel fiber. As a result, 4-H'ers understand how to get the most for their dollar while acting as responsible consumer citizens," Crew said.

The 4-H Cotton Bowl and Consumer Jamboree is sponsored by the Georgia Cotton Commission and the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Science's Cooperative Extension.
