Thanks to Mrs. Nancy Barclay for the beautiful flowers Sunday at Phillips Mill Baptist Church. .During the month of December, members of Phillips Mill Baptist Church are encouraged to give to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering. Many are excited about taking part this year in the Christmas program and going Christmas caroling. .Sincere sympathy is extended to the family of Carla Thaxton Brown, 33, who passed away Monday, December 3, in Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta after a long battle with liver disease. She was the daughter of Tommy and Fran Biggers Thaxton of County Line Baptist Church; and wife of William Brooks Brown. They were married January 18, 2003. She has a sister, Charlotte Bradford Welch, and her husband Bob and children, Joshua, Tabitha, and Bobby. She was the granddaughter of Mrs. Mamie Ruth Nash Biggers Cason and Mrs. Pearl Thaxton and the late Robert Thaxton, and a great-grandchild of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jim Nash, all of Rayle. Carla was a very talented person, blessed many hearts with her singing. Funeral services were held Saturday, December 8, at St. James United Methodist Church in Athens. Burial was in the Thaxton-Wynne cemetery at Rayle with Rev. Kent Reynolds officiating.
.Sincere sympathy is extended to the family of Barbara Simons Miller Combs, 71, of Bethesda Baptist Church near Union Point, who passed away Wednesday, December 5, at the Medical College of Georgia Hospital in Augusta. She was the youngest child of the late Jule and Edna Lyle Simons of Sandy Cross in Taliaferro County near Crawfordville. Barbara was married twice, first to the late Frank Miller, son of the late Luther and Marie Hackney Miller of Phillips Mill. They were blessed with three children: David, now of Plum Branch, S.C.; Hope (Mrs. Ken) Bennett of Buckhead; and Gail (Mrs. Steve) Strickland of Colbert. Frank Died in 1991. A few years down the road, Barbara was introduced to Franklin Combs, son of the late George and Aquilla Sherrer Combs, and grandson of the late Lewis and Rebecca Hampton Sherrer, all of Bethesda Baptist Church in Union Point. His wife, the former Dianne Wellmaker of Lincoln County, had died in 1992. Franklin and Dianne were blessed with two children, Frankie and Joyce (Mrs. Larry) Newberry. Barbara and Franklin had been married 13 years. Funeral services were held at Bethesda Baptist Church Saturday, December 8, with burial beside Frank at Phillips Mill Baptist Church. Rev. Jim Olds, pastor of Bethesda, and former pastor and friend, Rev. Lem Clark, of Penfieldofficiated. Among relatives of Barbara in Wilkes County are a niece, Linda Moore (Mrs. Buck) Echols, Sam Moore, and Mark Moore, who are children of the late Sheriff Cecil Moore and Mary Dean Simons Moore of Washington, and grandchildren of the late Mark and Essie West Moore of Phillips Mill. I have family connections with many of those mentioned. .Visitors of Mildred, Dan and Jerry McAvoy during the week included Benji and Sherry McAvoy, Billy McAvoy, Donnie McAvoy, Dorothy Ann and Jimmy Saxon. .Sunday, December 9, Morrison and Priscilla Maxwell were blessed to have their family together to celebrate Morrison's 77th birthday which was Thursday, December 6. Daughter Mary Jane and her son Tyler prepared her dad's favorite meal, breakfast for lunch. Son Lee of Atlanta and friend, Jason Paris, brought a real Christmas tree and decorations and all the children enjoyed decorating for Christmas. Lee brought one of his homemade lemon pies, his dad's favorite dessert. I don't ever remember decorating with doors and windows open and electric fans while decorating for Christmas. It was a fun day. Thanks to all for your cards, phone calls, and prayers. .Remember. God loves you.
