The Georgia Council of Teachers of English (GCTE) has been awarded $735 for its GCTE Fund Teachers for the Dream Program.

Bolton Lunceford, retired English teacher in Washington-Wilkes, is the treasurer of GCTE and has been for more than 12 years. She previously served as president of the organization. Ellen Cowne, former Washington-Wilkes English teacher, also served as president; and Anna Nero, another Washington-Wilkes English teacher, was winner of the New Teacher of Promise award. "We have been a presence for GCTE, considering how small our town is, comparatively," Bolton says.

Last week when I wrote about our great teenage team that inserts and delivers The News-Reporter to various locations, I omitted one of the team members. Victoria Mc- Clendon is an important part of the team and we appreciate her service every week along with the others. Sorry, Victoria!

Rebecca Montgomery, a prekindergarten teacher at the Washington Wilkes Elementary School, was recently named the WBBQ Augusta Teacher of the week. She was nominated for the honor by one of her students -- four-year-old Ray Collins. The reason for the nomination was that Ray really loves his teacher and has learned so much in such a short time. He talks about her constantly and sings all the songs that she has taught him over and over gain. Ray loves school and enjoys going every day.

A ribbon cutting was held for the grand re-opening of Liberty Park (the city playground on Liberty Street) Tuesday morning. The cleanup and repair of the playground, and the purchase of some new equipment, was sponsored by the Kiwanis Club and by Richard and Dana Kibbey and their daughter Rickelle, newcomers to Washington-Wilkes. It's open now for children to play.

. The Christmas Tour of Homes drew very positive comments from many of those on the tour. It was a busy tour with lots of attractions and it brought many people to The Square and the Downtown shops. The three loft apartments were a major attraction. All are very beautiful and functional and each one stands alone in its design and renovation. The view of The Square from the lofts of John and Rita Horton (over Blackmons') and Steve and Linda Saunders (over Pop-Lahr Possibilities) is spectacular. . . . Somehow it go by me that the loft over the former Main Street Paint building was to be included on the tour, so I did not visit that one, but I hear that it is very, very nice. It's owned by Tim and Deanne Crook and Doug and Elyse Giles.

.

Susan Pope was at the registration desk for the tour and gave me information on where some of the people were from. Included were Ohio; Washington State; Duluth; Greenwood, S.C.; Gainesville, Fla.; Lawrenceville; Cornelia; Thomson; Anderson, S.C.; Miami, Fla.; North Augusta; Ohio; Vidalia; Woodstock; and Hilton Head, S.C.

"What's going on in the old Blackmons' building on The Square?" has been a frequently asked question in recent months. Now we know. The downstairs will be home for Restore Galore Home Design Center. Karen Carter is the design specialist. She is the one responsible for decorating the loft apartment in the building which we all had a chance to visit on the Christmas Tour of Homes Saturday. Karen's sister and brother-in-law, Rita and John Horton, own the building and are responsible for the restoration.

I was invited to the Woman's Club luncheon Monday because I like to hear Shay Harris sing and she was the program for the day. With the temperature outside registering around 80 degrees (on December 10), Shay sang favorite Christmas songs and carols, and other favorites typical of the Christmas season. It really put me in the right frame of mind for Christmas. I'm ready to finish my shopping now, and get on with the Christmas dinner. Shay was accompanied by Jo Randall on the Woman's Club's grand piano. . . . Connie Danner and Carol Daniel prepared the food which was delicious. . . . I had another treat at the Lions Club spouses' night that night when Debbie McLeod presented a program of Christmas, country, and popular music, ending with the everpopular "Won't You Come Home Bill Bailey."

.

I've heard comments that Sunday's

Christmas Parade was the best Washington-Wilkes has had in recent years. With Blake Thompson and Ronnie Huffman at the helm, there were 70 entries traveling through Downtown Washington. And the parade was "put together" in just two weeks.
