Maple Drive joins Wilkes Sheriff's Neighborhood Watch program

Wilkes County Chief Deputy Mike Sisson (l) and Deputy Detrich Jones presented Maple Drive resident David Clark with a Neighborhood Watch sign warning potential thieves that they are being watched.
The folks on Maple Drive, off the Athens Highway, want everybody that visits their street to know that they look out for their neighbors, and they're keeping an eye on them, too.

Resident David Clark said the nine families on the street wanted to participate in the Wilkes County Sheriff's Department Neighborhood Watch program after a fire was started at the end of the road, he said.

"We've always looked out for each other," he said. "This just makes it a more formal thing."

Chief Deputy Mike Sisson said that he would like to extend the community crime prevention program to other neighborhoods in the county. "We hope we can do more Neighborhood Watches around the county. Just contact us at the sheriff's office."

The National Sheriffs' Association National Neighborhood Watch Program provides signs, decals, inventory records, and information on how to keep neighborhoods and homes safe.

"This neighborhood watch idea works," Sisson said. "Thieves notice the signs because they always worry about nosy neighbors. And the information we provide helps neighbors to know what to keep an eye out for, and what to do."
