Tells club about Heritage Trails
Steve Longcrier, founder and executive director of Georgia Civil War Heritage Trails of Evans, Georgia, was the guest speaker at the Washington Kiwanis Club on Tuesday, December 11. The mission of the Georgia Civil War Heritage Trails organization is to link historical education with economic development in the form of tourism. Longcrier noted that the organization has a 16-member board of trustees and a 20-member statewide history committee. He told Kiwanians that three trails are in the process of construction - Atlanta Campaign, March to the Sea, and Jefferson Davis. Three others are planned. Longcrier spoke in detail about the Jefferson Davis Trail which will have 32 interpretive sites from Elberton to Irwinville, Georgia, with one such site on the courthouse lawn in Washington. There are to be 14 trail marker signs to be erected in Wilkes County alone. He indicated that he's working with about 100 local jurisdictions in 50 counties presently. The Washington interpretive site at the courthouse is expected to be constructed by the fall of next year. Mark Waters (right) was the program host for the day.
