Brandon Freeman gets top award in VFW's patriotic writing contest
He was awarded $100 in cash by Commander Bo Standridge, Patriotic Pen Chairman Laura Houpt, and VFW Post 5899 Ladies' Auxiliary President Jeanette Dozier. Brandon is a seventh grade student in Debbie McLeod's class at Washington- Wilkes Middle School. Placing second in the contest was seventh grader Emily Treadwell. She is the daughter of Jeff and Amy Treadwell of Washington and is also a student of Mrs. McLeod. Emily received $75 for her winning essay. Jack Martin, son of Joy and David Martin of Tignall, placed third in the essay contest and was awarded $50. He is a sixth grade student of Pam Hall at Washington-Wilkes Middle School. There was a total of 39 entries in the sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. Students had to write a 300-400-word essay on a patriotic theme of their choice.
Ian Coe, senior at Washington Wilkes Comprehensive High School, placed first in the Voice of Democracy audio essay competition for the tenth district and will advance to the state competition. He was awarded $150 from the local VFW post. Ian is the son of Dr. Stan and Dr. Elizabeth Coe of Washington.
