Iris Garden Club enjoys annual holiday brunch, meeting Dec. 11

The Iris Garden Club enjoyed its annual holiday brunch and meeting at Lafayette Manor on Tuesday, December 11.

President Karen Stubbs presided and welcomed members including new member, Rachael Arnold.

A note was read from Laura Toburen thanking those members who participated in the Angel Tree Project of the First United Methodist Church.

In her treasurer's report Cathy Stackhouse reported the club's new cookbook "Colonial Cooks" has been selling well for Christmas gifts.

Franny Robinson, vice-president for programs, announced the next meeting will be at the Parish House of the Church of the Mediator on January 8 at 10 a.m. The program on orchids will be presented by George Thorpe.

Debbie Bennett, chairman of Environmental Education and Youth Services, reported that in January she will give the guidance counselor at Washington-Wilkes Comprehensive High School applications for a $3500 scholarship for students interested in environmental studies.

The Club voted to approve a donation to the Mary Willis Library for the purpose of purchasing children's books on such subjects as plants, gardening, the environment and butterflies.

Following the meeting, names were drawn for door prizes.

A delicious brunch was then served in the dining room by Sokun Slama, chef, and Guillaume Slama, host, proprietors of Lafayette Manor.
