Iris Garden Club awards prizes for decor as annual 'Night of Lights' illuminates city

The Wittscen Home took first place in the Whimsical "Wow" category of the Iris Garden Club's annual "Night of Lights" Christmas decorating contest..
The homes of Steve and Eleanor Blackmon, Charlotte Simmons, and Bill and Carol Wittscen took top honors in this year's annual "Night of Lights," which lights up the homes of Washington every year.

Judges from the Iris Garden Club viewed the homes Wednesday night, Marcia Paxton said. Rather than traditionally decorated homes being judged in one-story and two-story categories, she said, this year homes were entered in a single traditional/ historic category, a Christmas/ modern category, and a whimsical "Wow!" category.

In the Traditional/Historic category, the North Alexander Avenue home of Steve and Eleanor Blackmon placed first, the home of the Carlton Hearns took second, the Harris Blackmons' home placed third. Wisteria Hall, the home of Jim and Jane Bundy, received honorable mention.

In the Modern Christmas class, the Spring Street home of Charlotte Simmons, a perennial favorite, took top honors. Second place was the East Robert Toombs home of Rosemary Hopkins, and the North Alexander Avenue home of Bill and Laura Sleighter took third place honors.

The Blackmon Home was tops in the Traditional/Historic category.
In the Whimsical "Wow" category, the LaPrade Street home of Bill and Carol Wittscen took first place. Last year's winner, Nettie Belle Merriwether, took second place for her Kendall Drive home, and Jane Hudson took third place for her South Alexander Avenue home. Jennifer Slaton's home got honorable mention

As in years past, prizes will be $25 for first, $15 for second place, and $10 for third place in each category.
The Simmons Home took first place in the Modern Christmas class.
