Wrestlers sweep two, prepare for Redskin Rumble

Last Tuesday, January 15, at Jackson High School, the Washington- Wilkes Tiger Wrestlers swept their competitors in a runaway on one hand and a squeaker on the other.

The team cruised to an easy 52-18 win over Crawford County but competition was light. A more stacked Jackson team gave W-W a close race but the Tigers emerged with a one-point win, 40-39. Detailed results as provided by Head Coach Ed Lovvorn are as follows.

Washington-Wilkes 52,

Crawford County 18

The Tigers scored pins by Justin Guin and Josh McTier. Tyson Gilland won by 17-2 technical fall and Matthew Howard won a 16-8 major decision. Ryen Scarboro, Rob Lovvorn, John Lovvorn, Josh Cosby, and Evan Harrison all won by forfeit to beat the short-handed Crawford County team.

by tiebreaker criteria

The match began at 112 lbs. with a pin by Rob Lovvorn. John Lovvorn scored a 17-2 technical fall and Josh Cosby scored an 11-2 major decision. Following pins by Evan Harrison and Tyson Gilland, the Tigers led 27-6. Jackson then ran off a string of wins to lead 39-27 going into the 285 lb. match. Brandon Howard pinned his opponent at 285 lbs. and then Ryen Scarboro did the same at 103 to tie the score at 39- 39. The Tigers were then awarded 1 point on the third tiebreaker for having the most technical falls.

Tuesday, January 22, the Tigers hosted Morgan County, Elbert County, and Athens Christian in a quad meet at the W-WCHS gymnasium but results were not available by press time for this issue. On Saturday, January 26, the wrestlers will travel to Social Circle for the Redskin Rumble.
