Gilland, still undefeated, wins tourney; five other Tigers medal in Savannah

Tyson Gilland continues undefeated on the mats and most recently won his weight class at the Coastal Georgia Classic at Savannah-Groves High School. The tournament, held Friday and Saturday, February 1-2, was composed primarily of 4A and 5A schools including defending 4A State Champions Stockbridge, and 5A powers Camden Co. and Valdosta.
Other Tiger wrestlers finishing near the top of their weight classes were Josh Cosby, John Lovvorn, Rob Lovvorn, Josh McTier, Tyrance Ashmore, and Justin Guin.
The tournament was a mixed format, with three random-draw matches on Friday that seeded each wrestler into a 16-man double-elimination tournament on Saturday. The top six in each weight class received medals.
Fridays results were as follows:
119 pounds: John Lovvorn 3-0, with a 4-2 overtime win over Stockbridge, a pin over Brunswick, and a forfeit.
130 pounds: Josh Cosby 3-0, with a 9-7 decision over Blessed Trinity, a 6-2 decision over Brunswick, and a forfeit.
140 pounds: Tyson Gilland 3-0, with a 9-1 decision over Benedictine, an 8-1 decision over Lakeside, and a pin over Camden County.
112 pounds: Rob Lovvorn 2-1, with wins over Lakeside and Cross Creek.
145 pounds: Justin Guin 2-1, with wins over Johnson and Groves.
Also earning wins on Friday were Josh McTier over Johnson, and Tyrance Ashmore over Camden County.
In Saturday's tournament, Gilland placed first in the 140-lb. weight class.Gilland had a first round bye, the defeated Lorenzo Gonzales of Camden County 4-1. In the semifinals Gilland defeated returning state qualifier Scott Buzzaard of Blessed Trinity 3-0, and then won a 4-2 decision over All-American Alex Loper to win the tournament.
Cosby took third place at 130 lbs with a bye in the first round, an injury default win in the second round, and following a semi-final loss to state placer John Paul Lentz of Camden County, an 11-4 decision over state qualifier Jeffery Rowland of Johnson.
In the 119-lb. class, John Lovvorn took fourth place in a weight class that featured eight returning state qualifiers and two All-Americans. Lovvorn won a first round 14-0 decision over state qualifier Christian Hutcherson of Johnson, then pinned Ryan Weinstein of Riverwood. In the semi-finals, Lovvorn fell to All- American and Oklahoma signee Sam Spradlin of Camden, and then fell to Herd Reinhard of Valdosta to finish fourth.
Rob Lovvorn took fourth place at 112 lbs with a win by default in the first round before falling 10-7 to Matthew Moore of Benedictine.
McTier scored a win over Rob Dole of Riverwood to take sixth place at 152 lbs.
Ashmore pinned James Bryant of Camden County and Michael Harper of Brunswick to finish sixth in the 285-lb. class.
Justin Guin scored two more wins at 145 lbs. for a seventh place finish.
On Tuesday, February 5, W-W traveled to Banks County for a tri-meet with Banks and Winder- Barrow. Friday, February 8, the Tigers will be home for a Senior Night Tri-meet with Westside and Towns Co. Then on Saturday, W-W will compete in the Patriot Classic at Oglethorpe County.
