      Larry Jordan of Washington announces the engagement of his daughter, Holly, to Nicolas Hartley of Athens, son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Hartley of Evans. The bride-elect is also the daughter of the late Ada Ruth Bell Jordan and the granddaughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Tom Bell and the late Mr. and Mrs. James Walter Jordan.

Contest could help animal shelter receive $1 million
      The owner of Meow-Mix Cat Food is promoting a contest called zootoo makeover, in which the top 20 entrants are eligible for a makeover of up to $1 million. The Washington-Wilkes Animal Shelter is participating in the contest and is currently number 32 out of the more than 3,500 entrants. The shelter has been as high as number 15.

John Duggan remembered at annual scholarship dinner
      The Woman's Club was filled to near-capacity for the annual John Duggan Memorial Scholarship Dinner Monday, February 11, at the clubhouse. The dinner, sponsored by the Washington Woman's Club, honors the memory of John Duggan who lost his life to cancer on November 23, l972, at the age of 18.

      The Cornelia Johnson Circle of the First United Methodist Church held its Baby Recognition Service during the morning worship services on Sunday, February 10, in the sanctuary. This annual event is held to recognize babies of parents or grandparents born in the church family the previous year.

'From the Heart' benefit a success, proceeds to renovate Nash Library
      More than 200 Washington- Wilkes and out-of-town patrons of Wills Memorial Hospital attended the dinner and dance Valentine benefit for the Wills Memorial Hospital Foundation. The "From the Heart" benefit was held on February 2 at the Pope Center and has been termed a tremendous success.
