Organizers thank all who took part in Revolutionary Days celebration
to the Editor :
We want to acknowledge the many citizens of Washington- Wilkes who participated in the successful Revolutionary Days Celebration this past weekend. We believe all have a better understanding of the Battle of Kettle Creek and the role played by the citizens of Washington and Wilkes County during the American Revolution.
Lillie Crowe, Betty Slaton and the staff of the Mary Willis Library were well prepared for the large number of visitors on Friday and Saturday, and the colonial attire of everyone matched the occasion. Thanks to the library, Kettle Creek DAR Chapter, Ms. Meecham and W-W Middle School students for the Kettle Creek Poster Contest.
On Saturday the Washington Square was overflowing with over 250 children and adults who watched the Parade and enjoyed the Living History. Thanks to Skeet Willingham for telling about the beginnings of Washington and to the Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, W-W Middle School Poster Contest students, Miss Wilkes County pageant winners and Greene County AF JROTC cadets who marched in the Parade.
Attendance at the Kettle Creek Battleground was even larger for the 229th Anniversary Memorial Ceremony and the tours led by Army historians. About 500 people gathered at the Monument on War Hill Saturday afternoon for the Wreath Ceremony which featured members of the CAR, DAR and SAR and Battle of Kettle Creek descendants from at least nine different states. Thanks for logistical support provided by Wilkes County and City of Washington and shuttle vehicles provided by W-W School Board.
The Sunday Colonial Church Service and Ceremony at Elijah Clarke's Grave were especially meaningful. Thanks to the sponsorship of Pastor Fran Connell and the Bethel United Methodist Church, Nelson Noble and the Elijah Clarke State Park, and Mollie Carow of the Elijah Clarke DAR Chapter.
Special thanks to Joanne Pollock and Oleta McAvoy and Kettle Creek Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution; Ashley Barnett and Sue Davidson of W-W Chamber of Commerce; Mayor Willie Burns, Mike Eskew and Police Chief Mike Davis of City of Washington; Commissioner Sam Moore, Richard McAvoy, Deputy Sheriff Mike Sisson and EMS Director Blake Thompson of Wilkes County, Jane and Jim Bundy of Wisteria Hall; Peggy Anderson and Deb Talley of Pope Center; and Stephanie Macchia of Washington Historical Museum.
We recognize and appreciate Sparky Newsome and Kip Burke of The News-Reporter for outstanding publicity to inform and encourage public participation in this year's Celebration.
The weather could not have been better and we acknowledge all of those who took credit for it.
