Describes Tour de Georgia plans
      Donnie Smith, of the Georgia State Patrol (right), told members of the Washington Rotary Club about the impact the Tour de Georgia bicycle race is expected to have on the city of Washington when is comes through this spring. He outlined some of the anticipated traffic problems and told of plans to handle the large number of people expected to be in the county.

Bookmobile to be making rounds in Wilkes during Mar.
      The Bartram Trail Regional Library Bookmobile will be making its rounds in Wilkes County on March 5 and March 19. On March 5, the bookmobile will be at the First United Methodist Pre- Kindergarten, Simpson Corner, Wee Care, Wilkes County Health Care Center, and Kiddie Korner, in the morning.

     Matthew Huffman, a fifth grade student at Washington-Wilkes Elementary School, is the first fund-raiser of the year for the 2008 Relay for Life. Matthew turned in $105 which he raised selling baskets of candy. He is the son of Ronnie and Wendy Huffman of Washington.

Destiny, a product of Follett Software Company, is among the most popular library catalog management programs in the field.       Bingo can be lots of fun for the young and the old. Delhi and Beulah were well represented at bingo night at the Tignall Lunchroom Saturday night. O'Neil and Celeste Adams had their three grandchildren and Trip Harper with them. Their youngest grandson, Connor, really knows how to win at bingo. I think they had to back their car up to the door to load up all his prizes.

      Gracen Ware has been very busy during her reign as Miss Wilkes County. Gracen was a greeter at the Ernie Harwell Day celebration February 15, and was in the Revolutionary Days Parade. I know she has been singing in several festivals.

Ian and Genevieve were among 66 out of hundreds of applicants who were nominated to this all star orchestra.

Free legal help available to senior citizens March 11
      Members of the staff of the Georgia Legal Services Program (GLSP) will be in Wilkes County Tuesday, March 11, to meet with senior citizens wanting free legal help, on a first-come, first-served basis. Anyone who is a senior citizen, 60 years of age or older, and has a civil (non-criminal) legal issue may be able to receive help.

Audra Chapman joins extension officestaff as new 4-H agent
      The Univesrity of Georgia Extension officein Wilkes County has welcomed Audra Chapman as a new member of its officestaff. Chapman received her Associates Degree from Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in 2005 and earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Agriculture Education in 2007.

      The Wilkes County Health Department will be providing Headstart, Pre-Kindergarten, and Kindergarten hearing, vision, and dental screens free of charge. Jennifer Jackson, Wilkes County Nurse Manager, announces that the screenings will be done the week of registration for these programs which is March 3-7.

Rayle EMC junior dairy heifer show brings 26 young competitors to show their efforts
      The Rayle EMC Invitational Junior Dairy Heifer Show was held on Thursday, February 7 at the McGill-Woodruff Agricultural Center in Washington. The show featured 26 young participants from Greene, Lincoln, Oglethorpe and Wilkes counties. These exhibitors showed dairy heifers and competed against one another in four showmanship classes and five weight classes.

      Four piano students from the studio of Ruth E. Harris earned eligibility to perform at the Annual Georgia Music Educators Association (GMEA) In-Service Conference in Savannah January 24-26. The students were Christina Albertson and Troy Colvard, piano duet; Christina Albertson, soloist; and Ian Coe with Genevieve Coe, piano duet.
