Orators to compete at district level
     The annual Washington Optimist Oratorical Contest was held at Washington Wilkes Middle School on February 28. Damon Norman was the first place winner in the boys division and Calli Nickels was the first place winner in the girls division. They will represent the Optimist Club at the district competition on March 29 in Augusta.

Pope, Guin, Pharr selected to play in District Honor Band
      John Pope, Brittany Guin, and Michael Pharr were part of the Georgia 10th District Honor Band held in Augusta last weekend. All three students were selected by a strict audition process and rehearsed up to seven hours a day while attending the honor band clinic.

      The 2008 Washington-Wilkes Spring Tour of Homes is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, April 4 and 5. The annual tour is sponsored by the Kiwanis Club and the Woman's Club in partnership with the Washington-Wilkes Chamber of Commerce.

Spring sports are getting started; Guin and Pharr play in district band
      The month of March is the start of many different sports. Colorguard tryouts are after school and are held by Tara Townsend. Mrs. Townsend is also holding Auxiliary Tryouts on Monday, March 3. Golf starts March 3 as well, and is coached by Coach Eddie Lovvorn and Coach Don Keiser.

Broun scores high on immigration stance, co-sponsors related bills
      U.S. Congressman Paul C. Broun, M.D. achieved a perfect score on the Immigration Reduction Report Card issued by Americans for Better Immigration (ABI), a non-profit, non-partisan organization which lobbies Congress for reductions in immigration numbers.

      Students at WWPS have a 'song in their heart' and are willing to share it with others! WWPS Music program, led by Mrs. Ann Tiller, is an integral part of learning for all students in grades K-3rd. Students sing songs, play instruments, and learn how to use their voices to share feelings.

      The House convened last week on Tuesday, February 26, for the 23rd day of our 40 day legislative session. On the floor, we adopted legislation addressing our continued transportation funding problems, education and local school boards and adoption tax credit.

Retired educators to sponsor honorarium for high school senior
      The Lincoln-Wilkes Retired Educators Association is sponsoring an honorarium to be awarded to a high school senior in Wilkes and Lincoln counties. The honorarium is available to students who plan to attend a college or a vocational school for the 2008-2009 academic year.

      We all remember Bill Niemann and his valiant battle against a cancer that would not let go. His name was on prayer lists in churches throughout Wilkes County and beyond as his family, friends, and neighbors lent what support they could to Bill and Pat, his wife of 44 years.

Wilkes 4-H Dairy show team winds up season with good finish at big junior livestock show
      The Wilkes County 4-H Dairy show team came away with some high finishes after competing the 2008 Georgia Junior National Livestock Show held in Perry. The team finished third in showmanship and took third place for the Herdsman Award. Also, Moegen Swann took second place for his record book.

Free legal help available to senior citizens March 11
      Members of the staff of the Georgia Legal Services Program (GLSP) will be in Wilkes County Tuesday, March 11, to meet with senior citizens wanting free legal help, on a first-come, first-served basis. Anyone who is a senior citizen, 60 years of age or older, and has a civil (non-criminal) legal issue may be able to receive help.

      The Tignall Baptist Church Awanas held their annual Grand Prix Race Sunday in the Family Life Center at the church. The Awana group is led by Debbie White, director. Kenny Long gave an inspirational devotion before the race started. Each age group competed in not only racing but with the best designed entry.

      We had good services at Clifford's Grove Baptist Church Sunday. Rev. Martin's message was on the Ten Commandments, from Exodus 20:7. It has been a long time since we've had enough small children to have a beginners class, but now we have one and it started Sunday with several happy kids. Rape case leads round up of February arrests
      A 69-year-old man is charged with rape and Washington Police are investigating the case. WPD Investigator Lt. Joe Nelson said that Emery Samuel, of Rusher Street in Washington, was arrested February 22 after the alleged victim, a woman in her 30s, reported to police that Samuel had purchased alcohol for her, got her drunk, and took advantage of her.

      The students at the First Methodist Pre-K had a special visitor for the letter "Uu" last week. Marvin Hudson, Major League Baseball umpire, talked with the students about being an umpire and showed them the different hats, shirts, shoes, pants, and mask that he has to wear when he umpires different positions during a game. The students then asked questions.

The art entry deadline is March 7 at 10 a.m. and auditions for the talent show will be held March 12 at 6 p.m. At the Showcase March 14, local singer Billy Maxwell will provide entertainment during intermission.
