UGA gerontologist will speak at LIR session Mon. at library

LEONARD POON LEONARD POON Professor Leonard Poon, prominent University of Georgia gerontologist, will be the guest of Learning In Retirement Inc., Washington Chapter, for an orientation to the opportunities offered by the Georgia Geriatric Education Center.

The program is a one-session course in the winter and spring series for Learning In Retirement members. It is scheduled for Monday, March 10, at 2 p.m., in the Mary Willis Library. Guests are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Professor Poon will emphasize dementia as one of a number of courses available to professional and technical specialists in the field. The Geriatric Education Center recently developed these course materials and the Washington audience will be among the first to review and use them.

Poon's primary research interest is longevity and the survival characteristics of the oldest of the old. Some Washington folks have participated in his studies. In addition, he has contributed extensively to studies on changes in memory with age.

Among other titles, he is Professor of Health Policy and Management at the College of Public Health and Professor of Life Span Developmental Psychology in the Department of Psychology. He has directed the federally-funded Georgia Cente- narian Study for three years and is founding executive director of the International Centenarian Consortium.

Molly Burgess, daughter of Janet and Martin Burgess of Washington, is an education program specialist with the Centenarian Study, and will accompany Dr. Poon to Washington, as will Susan Bush, who specializes in dementia and dementia care.

The public is invited to attend this presentation of Learning In Retirement.
