Lincoln Co. exhibitors take top spots in steer show, sale

Wilkes County FFA member Greg Callaway showed the Supreme Champion Simmental heifer in the 54th Annual Washington Area Steer and Heifer Show held at the McGill Agricultural Center in Washington Saturday, March 1.

Wilkes FFA member Ethan Armour showed the Supreme Reserve Champion with his Chi-Influence heifer.

Jackson Armour of the Wilkes County 4-H Club showed the Champion Commercial Heifer; and FFA member Sheena Kopecky showed the Reserve Champion.

Ethan showed the champion Chi- Influence heifer and Greg showed the Reserve Champion.

Ethan took first place in 12th grade Showmanship.

There were eight Wilkes County exhibitors. They were Ethan Armour, Jackson Armour, Greg Callaway, William Garrard, Dalton Howard, Tommy Howard, Sheena Kopecky, and Gabe Strother.

Lincoln County's Justin Ashmore showed the Grand Champion Steer of the show; and C.J. Goldman, also of Lincolnton, showed the Reserve Champion.

Lincoln County 4-H took the County Group of 5 award.

The 2008 Show Program was dedicated to Herbert Powell, Wilkes County Agent from 1964 until 1985; and Lincoln County Agent from 1985 until retiring in 2001.

Powell was born and reared on a livestock and cotton farm in rural Clayton County. He is a graduate of Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College and the University of Georgia. He was instrumental in getting plans started for building a permanent home for the annual steer and heifer show. That facility is the McGill- Woodruff Agriculture Center in Washington.
