Tigers tune up for region competition next week
KELLEY ROBERTS PITCHED WELL AGAINST THOMSON But a late Bulldog rally put an end to the pitchers' duel. A couple of AAA teams beat Washington-Wilkes but not by much while the Tigers put a proper hurting on the Red Devils of Lincoln County during recent baseball action. And with region games not set to start until next week, it has been a good tune-up for the team.
This Friday, March 7, the Tigers will travel to Thomson for a rematch with the Bulldogs before starting region competition on the road against Putnam next Monday, March 10.
On Monday, March 3, the Tigers lost a close game to Elbert on the road by a score of 3-5. Caleb Saggus pitched well for the Tigers allowing only one unearned in fiveinnings of work on the mound.
The Tigers scored two in the first inning after a leadoff single by Saggus and a double by DJ Barnett. Drew Wilson hit a single to score Barnett to put two runs up. The Tigers scored their final run in the fifth after a leadoff walk and stolen base by Barnett. Jerrick Darracott hit a single to left field to score Barnett.
DREW WILSON HAS BEEN STANDING IN AT THE PLATE but has yet to take the mound due to a shoulder injury. The Tiger defense helped out Elbert with a dropped flyball. Elbert followed the error with consecutive singles and then a misplayed ground ball in the outfieldallowed both runners to score. Elbert struck again in the fifth scoring three runs on two hits. Two runs scored on strikeout pass balls.
Having hits for the Tigers were Saggus, Jerrick Darracott, Wilson, and Spencer Swinson.
On Saturday, the Tigers suffered their first loss of the season to Thomson, 0-2. Bulldog ace Krepps held the Tigers in check allowing only two hits while striking out 10 batters.
It was a pitchers' duel through most of the outing as Kelley Roberts pitched a great game for the Tigers going six scoreless innings. Thomson, however, scored a pair in the seventh off of two sacrifice flies to win the game. Barnett and Lee Thompson got hits for W-W.
Last Wednesday, February 27, the TIgers beat Lincoln County 10-4. Caleb Saggus pitched four innings to pick up his first win of the year. D.J. Barnett pitched the final three innings, recording an impressive seven strikeouts while allowing no runs.
The Tigers got off to an early start scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Ty McGill and Drew WIlson began the rally with walks. Jerrick Darracott singled to right field, scoring McGill. Barnett then followed with a single to right, scoring both Wilson and Darracott. Whit Chafin bunted Barnett to second base and a Zach Murray single sent him home, putting the Tigers up 4-0.
Lincoln battled back and scored two runs in both the second and third innings to tie the game at 4-4. But in the bottom of the fourth, Ty McGill started another rally with a double to right. After a walk to Wilson, Darracott managed an infieldsingle to score McGill. Chafin and Kelley Roberts both walked to load the bases and Murray walked to get an RBI. Hunter Jackson then singled up the middle to score two more runs and put the Tigers up 9-4.
The Tigers scored their final run in the fifth when McGill singled and eventually scored on an rbi single from Darracott.
