Blackmon leads Ga. Tech to 4-3 win over Rutgers Sat.
Charlie Blackmon tripled home the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning and then made a diving catch to end the game to lead No. 22 Georgia Tech (6-1) to a 4-3 win over Rutgers (2-2) Saturday afternoon at Russ Chandler Stadium.
Blackmon, who went 3-for-4 with a single, triple, and home run, drove in three of the Yellow Jackets' four runs while making his second start in right field.
Georgia Tech's website calls Blackmon a "talented and extremely athletic pitcher with a good arm that arrived at Georgia Tech in the fall of 2006 with two seasons of eligibility remaining after playing two years in junior college ... Played in just one game in 2007, but is expected to challenge for valuable innings in 2008."
Blackmon is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Myron Blackmon. He was drafted in the 28th round of the 2004 Major League Baseball draft by the Florida Marlins and in the 20th round of the 2005 MLB draft by the Boston Red Sox, but elected to remain in school.
His father reports that he was sidelined from pitching duty due to some elbow problems, "but then they found out he could hit." So he was put in the lineup in right field.
