Clearing up those gas bills
      Leigh Anne Aaron, of the University of Georgia's Cooperative Extension, was the guest speaker at the Washington Kiwanis Club's meeting on Tuesday, March 18. "Natural Gas and Energy Education" was the title of her program, the purpose of which was to educate consumers about the use, efficiency, and deregulation of the gas industry in Georgia.

Washington Lions Club to resume Broom Sale for Blind' next week
      After an interruption spanning several years, the Washington Lions Club will resume its popular houseto house "Broom Sale for the Blind" project next week. "Lions members and volunteer helpers will focus sales in various residential areas of Washington from time to time as manpower will allow," explained Lion President Mary Hubbard in announcing the sale.

Administrator tells state of the city
     Washington City Administrator Mike Eskew (left) was the guest speaker for the Washington Rotary Clubon Thursday, March 13, and he told members in attendance about various ongoing and upcoming projects in which the city is involved. He explained changes in economic structure and told of major efforts in economic development that are being made including projects totaling some $270 million in potential. Bill Amis was program host for the day.

Free pine trees available for planting to Arbor Day Foundation members
      The Arbor Day Foundation wants to celebrate the arrival of spring by helping people plant trees. Each person who joins the Arbor Day Foundation in March will receive 10 free white pine trees. The free trees are part of the nonprofit Foundation's Trees for America campaign.

Baseball team keeps winning and students keep achieving
      This past week, the Washington-Wilkes Middle School baseball team played three home games. On Tuesday, they played against Putnam County. They won by the score of 5-1. On Saturday, March 15, the team played Wilkinson County in a double header. They won both games by scores of 11-1 in the first game and 8-0 in the second game. For the season, they are 4-1.

      Each day students at Washington- Wilkes Middle School participate in Extended Learning Time (ELT). This thirty-minute period of time is intended to help students with skills they need to be successful in their academic classes. In previous years, students remained in their homeroom classes for this block of time and worked on reading and mathematics skills.

      When the General Assembly finally reached Day 30 on Tuesday last week, the Senate was successful in passing more than 30 bills over to the House of Representatives. We passed a measure that would establish a threelevel system of stroke centers to provide better care to Georgia's stroke patients.

      Life was good for Esper Lee last August. Lee had been enjoying a well-deserved retirement from the Georgia and South Carolina school systems since 2003. He had been a vital staff member of the Washington Wilkes Comprehensive High School until 1999 and then continued to teach in South Carolina until 2003.

      Tickets for the Briarwood Academy Chorus production of Fiddler on the Roof, which will be presented at 8 p.m. on March 28-29 in the Briarwood gym, are now on sale in the school office. Reserved and general admission tickets may be purchased in advance for $10 at the school office,which is open from 7 a.m. until 4 p.m., Monday through Thursday.

Weather warnings misunderstood, director says
      Wilkes County again dodged a bullet this weekend when a storm front that caused deadly tornados across North Georgia brought only strong winds, heavy rains, and large hail here, even as tornado warnings kept citizens and authorities on their toes.

     Dr. Bruce Holes visited with the students at the First United Methodist Pre-K in observance of Children's Dental Health Month. Dr. Holes took a video for the children to watch and several items from his dental officeto show the children. Each child received a goody bag courtesy of Dr. Holes.       The North Wilkes Library is fortunate in having two computers now. One will be used with children's games. Thanks to Carol McTier and Sybil Ashmore who donated books last week. I know that last Saturday was not a good day for storytime with the kids because of the stormy weather, but the storyteller was there. I started to just read to Becky Dixon.

Tea and Learn hears Anne Myers
     Anne Myers, RN, Wills Memorial Hospital nurse and diabetic support group facilitator spoke to the Wills Memorial Tea and Learn last Thursday on the subject of "Managing Your Handicaps." Volunteer coordinator Pat Niemann said, "Since an injury several years ago, she has much empathy for persons with handicaps." Sissy Murray and the Wills Memorial Hospital cafe staff provided Easter cookies and punch for the gathering.

Rainy Highway 78 claims another vehicle
      Just a week after woman was seriously injured in a wreck caused by standing water on, Mary Williams, 66, of Washington hit the same patch of water a week ago Friday afternoon, losing control of her 2003 Dodge pickup and crashing into a tree. She was transported to Wills Memorial Hospital for treatment.

North Wilkes fireclaims home
     Ernest Clark (at left) looks on at his nearly destroyed home Monday morning on the Elberton Highway north of Tignall. Clark said he and his wife escaped unharmed after a firestarted in a clothes dryer vent at the rear of the double-wide manufactured home.Fire Chief Alan Poss said that the lack of volunteer firefighters in the area during the day was a problem, but firefighters were able to save part of the home that housed family photo albums and heirloom firearms.

      WJBF-TV News Channel 6 has begun to promote its March 28 "Your Hometown Tour" visit here with on-the-air promotional announcements starting this weekend. The visit is being mentioned briefly on Channel 6 now, and full promos will begin to air Sunday, Robert Pippen told The News- Reporter, a co-sponsor of the visit.
