Kyle Brown presented the program at the Washington Optimist Club's monthly meeting held Tuesday, April 8, at the Fitzpatrick Hotel. Brown presented a program on Camp Newford - a Christian-based camp that Brown and his wife, Sandra, started in 2006. The camp is for kids ages 6-12 and is held each year in June. More ... To raise money for the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life, students at Washington-Wilkes Primary School participated in a Pet Contest. Students and teachers donated a dollar to enter a photo of their pets in the contest. Some students donated several dollars to enter more than one photo. The ceremony consisted of a biography of the life of Truitt, laying of wreaths, recognition of each chapter that attended, and recognition of dignitaries. More ... Rescue 1 crewmen help Washington resident Ernie Summerville out of his damaged truck Friday afternoon, after his pickup collided with a semi at the intersection of East Robert Toombs and Highway 78, the busiest intersection in town. Summerville escaped serious injury by the Grace of God and by the efforts of the semi driver to nearly stop before the impact.Washington Police say that drivers on the highway often miss seeing the traffic lights, or misread them at high speed. More ... As a part of the 4-H yearly community service activities, Wilkes Co. 4-H'ers decided to donate their time toward making our city's park a better environment for inhabitants that live there. The 4.H fer gathered trash as well as a few unexpected items such as shoes, clothes, tires, finechina pieces, and a baby stroller. This is a wonderful opportunity for our 4-H program to give back to our wonderful community. The students had an exciting adventure to see who could findthe most unique items. More ... For the first time in over four years, there will be an increase in subscription rates for the print edition of The News-Reporter. Local volunteers to help with the Tour de Georgia visit to Washington will be meeting Thursday evening to go over the day's events and assignments for the race. The mandatory volunteer orientation is set for Thursday, April 17, from 5:30-6:30 p.m. in the County Commission boardroom at the Wilkes County courthouse. And there is still a need for more volunteers for the day. More ... 114 In a second crash in as many weeks at almost the same spot, two Athens men are immobilized by Wilkes EMTs as a precaution after their Saturday wreck. After a heavy rain, their SUV skidded, crashed into oncoming traffic, and flipped in to the trees along Highway 78 just beyond the Washington-Wilkes Airport Saturday afternoon. The two had climbed out of the SUV unaided and did not seem to be seriously injured, but were immobilized and transported to Wills Memorial Hospital for examination. Their vehicle had just crossed the road after hitting a patch of standing water, which is common on large stretches of the highway. Two people in the pickup truck with which the SUV collided were examined and one was transported to Wills Memorial. The Georgia State Patrol is investigating the wreck. More ... |
