W-W Primary Performers perform, receive musical instrument prizes
      The Washington-Wilkes Primary Performers presented a program of songs for Honors Day at W-WPS. It was the last of four programs presented this year by the performing group. Musical selections were "Big Dreams," "I Want to Be," "Summer Is Coming," "Time To Say Goodbye," "So Long" by Teresa Jennings, and "Friends To The End" by Jay Althouse.

Tailiaferro percussion ensemble performs
     The students and faculty of Washington-Wilkes Primary School were entertained with a concert Friday afternoon given by the Taliaferro County Percussion Ensemble. The 25-member ensemble was under the direction of Joan Cole. Selections performed were "Entertainer;" "Peter Gunn;" "Snare,Tapps, and other Hunting Devices;" "Brazil;" "Afro Blue;" "C-Jam Blues;" and "Oye Como Va." The primary school children really enjoyed the Latin rhythms of the music and joined in with clapping, snapping, and shoulder dancing.

Key Club tells Kiwanis of plans
     Jennifer Atkinson, W-WCHS Key Club faculty advisor (center), and Megan Churning, Kiwanis Division 6 Key Club Lieutenant Governor (right), were the guest speakers at the Washington Kiwanis Club on Tuesday, May 20. Both Atkinson and Churning discussed current and planned Key Club activities at W-WCHS and presented a PowerPoint program highlighting the significantevents during the past year. It was reported that the Key Club membership doubled in the past year to 30 students with a goal of 45 students next year. Currently statewide there are about 6,000 high school students participating in local Key Clubs. Sherry Hudson, the club's Sponsored Youth chairman, (left) was program host for the day.

Reese Booker Scholarship Committee to hold memorial service
      The Reese J. Booker Scholarship Committee will have its annual Reese J. Booker and Rosa Grant Warthen Memorial Service Sunday, May 25, at the Marks Tabernacle Baptist Church, Washington, at 6 p.m. Pastor Matthew Harden and the New Tabernacle Baptist Church are scheduled to be in charge of the service.

First graders treated to dairy farm visit
     Lamaar Davis, Teneiko Tate, Clayton Foster, and Tamayia Wheeler got up close and personal with one of the calves when first grade students from Washington-Wilkes Primary School took a field trip to the Bentley Dairy Farm. On the trip, the students learned about milk production and farming and the Bentley family provided each student with an ice cream treat at the end of the visit.

Memorial Day tribute from a Marine mom
      At 2 a.m., my cell phone rang. The voice on the phone said, "We just landed and I should be at the base in two hours." The news my family had waited seven months to hear had finally come. Our Marine was back on U.S. soil, having landed at the Marine Corps Air Base at Cherry Point, North Carolina.

Sierra Thomas earns adult scholarship from Georgia housing authority group
      Sierra Contessa Thomas, a resident of Washington Heights Apartments on Meredith Circle, has received a scholarship to help with her expenses as a student at Athens Technical College. Thomas received the scholarship from the Adult Student Scholarship program sponsored by the Georgia Association of Housing and Redevelopment Authorities.

W-WCHS CTAE programs seek industry certification

      W-WCHS currently has two programs which have been industry certified. Those programs are Healthcare Science and Agricultural Mechanics. Agricultural Mechanics will recertify this year.       Seven Washington-Wilkes Comprehensive High School FFA members attended the 80th annual Georgia FFA State Convention April 23- 26 at the Macon Centreplex. There were 2,752 statewide FFA members in attendance. The theme for this year's convention was "Blue Jackets, Bright Futures.

North Wilkes Library gets $700 grant to buy children's books
      The North Wilkes Library has been awarded a $700 grant for children's books from the Libri Foundation. The Libri Founndation is headquartered in Eugene, Oregon, and was established in 1989 for the sole purpose of helping rural libraries acquire new, quality, hardcover children's books they could not otherwise afford to buy.

     Mr. and Mrs. Richard Kibbey, owners of the new Retro Cinema and Books on Spring Street, were hosts to the First Baptist Church Pre-K to view "Jack and the Beanstalk" on April 30. The children enjoyed popcorn, fruit snacks, and drinks as they viewed the movie. It was a unique experience that was enjoyed by all. 'Shagging' in the ballroom
     About 65 members of the CSRA Shag Club from Augusta filled the ballroom at the Fitzpatrick Hotel in Downtown Washington for an evening of dancing after a delicious dinner in the Down Under restaurant in the hotel. The event was hosted by Guillaume Slama, owner of the hotel, and organized by Barbara and Donald Wheatley of Washington-Wilkes. Another shagging evening is planned for early August. In preparation, shagging classes will be offered in the ballroom beginning in June for anyone interested in participating.

      The University of Georgia has announced the names of undergraduate students who were named Presidential Scholars or achieved the Dean's List for spring semester. The Presidential Scholar designation recognizes undergraduates who have scored a perfect 4.0 grade point average during the semester.

W-W Senior Ethan Armour earns $1,000 scholarship from Washington Ford-Mercury and Ford Motor Co.
      Ethan Armour, a senior at Washington Wilkes High School and a member of the Wilkes County FFA, has been awarded a $1,000 scholarship by Washington Ford-Mercury and Ford Motor Company. He is the son of Tracy and Denise Armour of Washington. Armour plans to study Agricultural Business Management at Athens Area Technical Institute.

      Members of the staff of the Georgia Legal Services Program (GLSP) will be in Wilkes County Tuesday, June 3, to meet with senior citizens wanting free legal help, on a firstcome, first-served basis. Anyone who is a senior citizen, 60 years of age or older, and has a civil (non-criminal) legal issue may be able to receive help.
