Pope Farm honored by Ga. Forestry for forest stewardship
      The Pope Farm, located on the Newtown Road in Wilkes County and owned by Susan and Edward Pope Jr., has received the Georgia Forestry Commission's Forest Stewardship Award and obtained Forest Steward recognition. The 180-acre farm has been managed under Georgia's Forest Stewardship Program since 2005.

New veterinary office opens in Lincolnton
     The Lincolnton-Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce hosted a ribbon cutting at the new location of Lincoln Co. Veterinary Services on May 9. Tells of facts concerning Vietnam
     Karl Luken (right), a retired U.S. Army Warrant Officer,was the guest speaker at the Washington Kiwanis Club on Tuesday, May 27. Luken, who served in Vietnam as a helicopter pilot, presented a program of "Facts and Myths of the Vietnam War" based on information provided by Major General David R. Bockel USA (Retired), Director of Army Affairs of the Reserve Officer's Association. Luken presented a number of statistics in various categories regarding the officialservice period - August 5, 1964, to May 7, 1975. He said that the American military was not defeated in Vietnam and did not lose a battle of any consequence but that the South Vietnamese military did. Jim Griggs was the program host for the day.

'Very special' eggs kept all the way through school
      Can Easter eggs last twelve years? Four Class of 2008 graduates can attest to the fact that they can. Debbie Lindsey who is now retired after 30 years teaching first grade at the Washington-Wilkes Primary School, had one volunteer in particular by the name of Kermit Hocutt that would think of unique ways to inspire and challenge the students.

Stockwell to speak at Tea and Learn set for June 3
      Wills Memorial Hospital will host a Tea and Learn June 3 at 2:30 p.m. in the hospital cafeteria. Teresa Stockwell will speak on topics, "Do Not Resuscitate" and "Advanced Directive". Mrs. Stockwell grew up in Corbin, Ky., and attended Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond, Ky, for two years. She graduated from Augusta Technical College with a paramedic degree.

The program honored third, fourth, and fifth graders for outstanding academic achievement. Free legal help set for Tuesday, June 3 at Senior Center
      Members of the staff of the Georgia Legal Services Program (GLSP) will be in Wilkes County Tuesday, June 3, to meet with senior citizens wanting free legal help, on a firstcome, first-served basis. Anyone who is a senior citizen, 60 years of age or older, and has a civil (non-criminal) legal issue may be able to receive help.

     Barry Fleming (right), former member of the Georgia House of Representatives, spoke to the Washington Rotary Club at its regular weekly meeting last Thursday and told members of several of the important things done during the 2008 session in Atlanta. He talked briefly about transportation, tort reform, tax issues, and other matters. Tammy Bryngelson (left) was program host.

Unemployment rate is up from year ago across Ga.
      The Georgia Department of Labor reported that the unemployment rate in the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA) declined to 5.7 percent in April, down three-tenths of one percent from a revised 6.0 percent in March. However, the rate was up from 4.8 percent in April of 2007.

      "Dig History" is a week-long day camp specially designed for kids, ages 11-17, interested in archaeology. During the week, junior archaeologists will work alongside professional archaeologists to learn about survey, mapping, forensics, and excavation.

Beta Club experiences Retro Cinema
     The Junior Beta Club at Washington-Wilkes Middle School celebrated the end of the school year with a field trip to Retro Cinema. The 40 students enjoyed popcorn, a drink, and a movie. The students and chaperones were amazed that something so nice is now in Washington and expressed their thanks to the owners, Richard and Dana Kibbey, for "a great field trip!" Later he was also recognized during the worship service and stood and told that he was born 84 years ago in the Palmetto community of Oglethorpe County and has enjoyed a good life.
