The Georgia State Patrol is investigating a head-on collision in which a Thomson man was killed and an Evans mother and her 2-year-old twins were seriously injured early Saturday morning

Authorities say that the collision, on the Thomson Highway near Upton Mill Plantation, happened about 7 a.m. Saturday, when a Cadillac driven by a Thomson man collided head-on with a van driven by an Evans woman with two toddlers.

Wilkes County EMS Director Blake Thompson said both drivers had to be extricated by Rescue 1 personnel, and that the Cadillac driver died en route to the Medical College of Georgia by air ambulance.

The mother in the van was airlifted to MCG, and the twins, who had broken legs, were taken by ground ambulance to MCG, as was a passenger in the Cadillac.

Trooper First Class Tracy Webb is investigating the crash.

In another accident Friday night, a 19-year-old Evans teen rolled her car on the Lincolnton Road. Wilkes EMS Director of Operations Tina Bailey said that the accident happened in heavy rain, and the teen's car landed in a shallow ditch upside down. "A bystander, we don't know who, held her head out of the water until first responders arrived. We would have probably lost her if it hadn't been for that. She was very fortunate."

She was taken to MCG in critical condition.
