Let's remember our fathers next Sunday on Father's Day. Here's an anonymous quote: "When I was a boy of 14,my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be 21, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years." Isn't that the truth . . . the older we become, the smarter our parents become. My grandfather never darkened the door of a kitchen. My father finally learned how to boil water for his instant coffee. My husband taught me how to cook, and now my son does a lot of cooking. I'm proud of this generation of fathers. Our older generations of fathers didn't have wives who worked outside the home, so they weren't needed in the kitchen. ƒThe mystery of the blimp last week has been solved. Danny Matthews called and said he saw it with his binoculars. James Smith also saw that it was advertising for Direct TV. We just needed some young eyes. ƒIt's time for reunions again . . . class reunions and family reunions. Margaret Fortson had the opportunity to attend both in one weekend. In fact one of those reunions was at her home. Information about the Tignall High School class reunion will be in next week's paper. ƒBeulah Baptist Church had good attendance at their homecoming last Sunday. Frances Johnson, Sara Frances Henderson's daughter, of North Augusta, S.C., attended the homecoming at Beulah. Also, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Rhodes Jr. of Mc- Donough came for several days and attended homecoming with the rest of the family. One of their members said they had a good message from Rev. Lem Clark, good singing, good food, and good company. ƒSavannah Hilley from Ocala, Fla., spent a week with her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. David Hilley. David and Nancy met her parents, Mr. and Mrs. David Hilley Jr., in Cordele to pick her up on Saturday, May 31. Savannah attended Bible School at Mallorysville. Mr. and Mrs. Stacy Hilley of Commerce attended Bible School commencement. Audry Duck of Elberton and Alicia Barker visited with Savannah while she was here. The Hilleys met Stacy and Amanda Hilley and Owen for lunch on Tuesday, June 3, in Royston. Stacy's friend, Adam Beatles, also joined them for lunch. They attended the Prince reunion at Camp Harmony in Elberton Sunday, June 1. ƒRobbie Tanner and Gloria Harris met longtime friends in North Augusta Tuesday, June 3, for lunch and shopping. These longtime friends were Mary Alice Belk of Lancaster, S.C.; Estelle Davis and Laraine Powell of Catauba, S.C. They enjoyed this girls day out. ƒLayton and Gloria Harris enjoyed their great-grandsons, Jacob and Dylan Harris of Cleveland, Tenn., over the weekend. They bought a little sprinkler fun item thinking the boys would enjoy it, but no, all they wanted was the water hose and some buckets. There is no need to buy expensive toys for children. All they need is a water hose, buckets, rocks, sticks, and a big cardboard box and they are perfectly happy. ƒLast Saturday night, Gloria Harris and Margaret Connor enjoyed the Fountain Campground singing. ƒ Last Thursday, Kay Tyler was in the Home Cafe for lunch when she saw some of her high school acquaintances, Gail Wansley Mullinax of Anderson, S.C., and Neina Wansley Thompson of Augusta. They were on their way to visit with Margaret Loadholt. ƒMr. and Mrs. Dave Derrick have had children and grandchildren visiting off and on all last week and throughout the weekend. They were Mike, Michael, and David Derrick of Loganville; Sally Derrick of Athens; and Jeff Derrick who has just retired from the Air Force. ƒSydney Tyler of Hoschton spent the weekend with her grandparents, Alex and Kay Tyler. They carried her home Sunday afternoon and attended another baseball game that grandson Jordan Tyler participated in. Kay and Carolyn Gammon carried Sydney, Curt, Kara, and Kaci Gammon to see "The Wizard of Oz" Saturday night at the Bolton Lunceford Playhouse in Washington. When they left, all their grandchildren who attended this play announced that they want to attend the drama camp next year. We'll see! ƒVisiting with Tony and Marion Hammond Sunday afternoon were Jim and Betty Pallas of Madison County. ƒWe are sorry to hear that little Camden Hammond, son of Marc and Heather Hammond, broke his leg about two weeks ago. This was a slip and slide accident with his brother. ƒFaye Durham and Beverly Johnson took Celeste Adams out for lunch to celebrate a belated birthday last Thursday at Down Under at the Fitzpatrick Hotel. ƒ Bible School at Mallorysville Baptist Church had an average attendance of 61 each night last week. Everyone enjoyed the old fashioned Bible School. ƒTignall Baptist Church revival services last week were well attended. There were good messages each night but Monday night's message really hit home with many of us. That message was on being an encourager instead of a discourager. As a result I'm really trying to be more encouraging to others. On Wednesday night there were 37 men from the PenfieldChristian Home, most of them very young, who came and joined our choir. They were wonderful. Everyone enjoyed the homemade ice cream afterward. ƒGraydon and Pat Bobo joined a family get-together in Bainbridge over the weekend. Traveling the longest distance was a cousin, Jane Gibson, who came from San Antonio, Texas. ƒLet's remember the following people in our prayers: Alma Price who had surgery last week; her daughter, Mary Thurmond, who has some health problems; Vivian Wolozin who is back in the hospital in Athens; Myrline Thornton who had surgery this week; Daryl Albea who also had surgery last week and will be starting treatment right away; and Nita Riley. ƒVacation Bible School will begin at Tignall Baptist Church Monday night, June 16, at 6:30 and continue until 9 p.m. and will continue through Friday night with commencement being on that night. The theme for the Bible School is Outrigger Island. All children are welcome.
